Hang onto your wallet
They complicated a simple appraisal on a ring. I dropped it off and was told the appraiser would be in later that week, to stop back. I left a $50 deposit. When I returned, I kid you not, I was asked "what is it worth?" You see, it was a somewhat unique ring. I think they were trying to determine sentimental value, or to attach a higher price om it since it;s not the kind of jwelry you can just buy anywhere. I explained that all I needed was a value on it for my insurance company. They were persistent. Again, I'm not joking. They told me to contact the place I got the ring and ask them what the value was, I did just that. The 3rd party, predictably, laughed and asked, "isn;t that the jeweler's job?" I returned to Changet's and asked for my $50 back, but unfortunately had misplaced my receipt. Fair enough, except that I'd known Nick for over 35 years. He knew my father. I expected a minimal amount of respect.
