Beautiful Venue, Amazing Food

We had a small wedding (50 guests) and there aren’t that many venues willing to have a small Saturday wedding. Mill on the River has two banquet rooms- our room had a max capacity of around 75, and the other room was for large weddings (don’t know max capacity, sorry!). There was another wedding in the big room that day (plus they are an actual restaurant and it was Saturday evening) but the team at the Mill made us feel like our wedding was the only thing happening that day!
The grounds are so beautifully landscaped and the reception room was so rustic and beautiful, I didn’t have to spend money on extra decorations- just the favors and flowers for the tables!
The food there is AMAZING! We went the buffet route so people could just pick and choose what they wanted, and then we had passed hors d'oeuvres and cheese/cracker table. Our guests absolutely raved about how good all the food was!
So we got the beautiful wedding we wanted, and our guests all left with happy bellies, so it was a win for everyone!

Beautiful, Great Food & Atmosphere, BUT...

Pros & Cons: I was very smart to read several reviews about this venue which helped tremendously in getting ahead of several issues, and even as prepared as I was, things still went wrong.
Pros: I was happy with the atmosphere both inside & out. I was married on 10/8/23 with a 4:30 pm start time. We used the gazebo which was beautiful, and the chairs were nice and reasonably priced. They gave 30 minutes for the ceremony, which was very good, and because we used their venue for the reception, it was no extra charge which was fantastic. One thing to note if you do the same, find out where the sun will set at that time of day and year. Our time frame meant that the sun was setting diagonally from behind the seated guests but was fiercely bright and blinded anyone standing at the altar. It was difficult to read, and look at each other, the camera, and the guests and the photos showed it lol. Also consider that the guests sit in chairs on the lawn. It rained all week, softening the ground, good thing I told guests to prepare for that well in advance of the wedding day. Our wedding website here was very thorough helping our guests consider many things before they arrive if you want to borrow ideas. We used the deck for photos, but it snagged many a dress, including mine which I knew it would, but I wanted the photos there. I tried to be careful, but you can't remember anything that day, it's too much of a rush, so keep that in mind. I don't fault the venue for this stuff, just more of a note for y'all to consider.
They do not allow any synthetic confetti or sparklers. I am a fan of the only organics policy. I dried flower petals to be thrown at us.
The DJ they recommended, Rob Guilmette, was excellent. He listened to everything, was well priced, patient, professional, and attentive. Big plus and great job with filling in the blanks for things we didn't know we wanted. Our guests LOVED him.
The food was SO Delicious! The choices were plenty, and we were given a certificate to try the food in the restaurant in advance.
Pricing was good considering the Ceremony was free, and alcohol was included in our package.
Cons: THEY DO NOT Have or Provide a coordinator. They have banquet managers that will make sure that the food and beverage gets served, and the tables are set up with the basics. If you provide decor, you will be at the mercy of the person who sets it up for you just doing their best. Also, they only set up no more than 2 hours in advance and have only a couple of staff that do it, as they can AND WILL book up to 2 events a day in each of their venue rooms. If you want the reception set up a specific way, and or have a lot to set up, you WILL NEED TO HIRE OR HAVE EXTRA HELP, but also, know that they will not let you come in any earlier than the setup staff. Your setup time is limited. Keeping it simple it the best idea for this venue. In contrast mine was very elaborate, full blown DIY Enchanted Forest, and it really was difficult to get it done in time, and I had 4 to 6 extra people helping with it. I lost the morning photos and time with my mom because she was a helper, and in retrospect, I'm not sure it was worth it. Also, glass decor is risky, I read that other weddings had stuff get broken, so I tried not to use it, but my decor did also suffer several casualties. For me it hurt because I personally hand made everything. They really try to clean up FAST, gentleness goes out the window, and you only get 1 hour to clean up.
The manager I worked with didn't actually work my wedding, and there were things that fell through the cracks. We were supposed to be served our cocktail hour food and drink outside while doing photos while the guests were downstairs enjoying that part of the evening, and they did not bring us anything when I was assured that they would. I should have hired a coordinator because they would have checked with the staff for us. Also, the lack of a coordinator hurt in other ways, especially with time management. They only gave us 4 hours for the reception, and I didn't realize how that IS NOT ENOUGH TIME. The bride and groom get pulled in so many directions, and photos took so much time, especially since we wanted the night photos. The bustle of my dress took way longer than I anticipated, I didn't have much time to dance because I wanted to see family I hadn't seen in years. Things like that take more time than you think. I had no time to really check out everything I made on the tables and enjoy the fruits of my labor. So, I think a venue offering more than 4 hours is a smarter bet. New brides don't realize this.
The wait staff were very rude to my mother, knowing she was mother of the bride. I think they were maybe having a bad day but when my mother asked where to get a plate, the lady yelled at her? She didn't tell me till recently so I couldn't address it.
Our reception was downstairs in the River Room, which is beautiful, but they don't have central AC down there, and even in October after sundown, IT WAS HOT! They have these little mini units that just didn't cut it with 50 people down there. Also, there are no bathrooms on this floor, everyone will have to go back upstairs, and there are not many stalls.
They are a restaurant first, so they do not have a bridal suite. I got ready at our nearby hotel, The Cambria, which was a smart move to be so close to the venue, because I was running late.
SOoooo, over all it was more good than bad, and if I had hired a coordinator, keep in mind I knew that they didn't provide one and had 4-6 helpers at all times to circumvent most of the issues that were mentioned by other brides, it would have been almost perfect. I hope this helps.

Easy experience, great value

Overall, I would say this was exactly the experience advertised for at the Mill. The food is absolute incredible, my guests still rave about the quality of the food and the bread especially (although I didn't get to have a piece, because they ran out since my guests loved them so much!). With regard to the actual lead up to the day, I was working with Sierra who was organized and easy to work with leading up to the day. She was very flexible about helping me re-use my decorations/florals from the ceremony to my reception, and I really appreciated her doing so as I was initially told by the wedding coordinators that they would very limitedly assist us with things like this. I felt like they undersold how much they'd help with, and then overdelivered on the day of on how much they ended up helping with (so a positive, but it did weird me out in the beginning). My only true complaints were that they accidentally did not have enough seats at one of the tables for my guests, even though they had a seating chart in advance. I was really upset about this because it took so long for them to provide them a seat at their table, I would say about 45 minutes or so. It felt really embarrassing, although my friends were ok with it. When I expressed my frustration with the lead server, she told me that "I needed to make sure my guests were taken care of", which was a very offputting comment that upset me... because the seating chart was something done in advance to make sure my guests were cared for. I understand people make mistakes but a more appropriate response would have been to just apologize and handle the situation quickly. This was kind of the beginning of the head server's rudeness toward myself and my husband, and the rest of our guests during the evening. A few people complained to me after the wedding about her specifically, which was shocking to me because I thought it was just toward us. We also had our wedding in the River Room, which is advertised to fit up to 80 people and we had 65 people. It was very tight at 65, with space for dancing in the middle. I can't imagine if we had 80 people in there. I think it would sit more comfortably at 50-60 for an intimate wedding celebration. I do recommend the River Room if you are looking for a smaller wedding celebration in a charming space. Again, food is incredible and the grounds were as well. I would recommend.
