Negative far outweighs the positive
Overall, we wouldn't recommend him. He didn’t ruin the event, but the negative outweighed the positive. He provides multiple services including videoing the ceremony and reception and he includes an edited video at the end. He also offered additional options like karaoke and a photo booth, which we declined.
Positives included a busy dance floor most of the night, he provided microphones and emceed the event, the music was at an appropriate volume, he provided a guitar for our wedding singer to use, and the initial video we saw was nice- it included the ceremony and a few clips of the reception.
Negatives:
-He mixed up the father/daughter and mother/son dance songs, and then asked everyone why no one stopped/told him. When he realized he played the wrong songs, he proceeded to go up to me during my husband's dance and give me an explanation. At that point, I only wanted to make the best of the moment and watch my husband.
-Throughout the reception, he went up to my husband and I repeatedly. Even a friend commented that he kept asking for our attention. Taking us away from time we were just trying to enjoy the evening.
-We had emailed over a list of songs the day before for each part of the wedding including “must-play” songs to be played during those times. I had provided a list of ~10 songs for cocktail hour and told him the rest were up to him. During the cocktail hour, when he had finished playing the songs we provided him, he immediately began playing our songs intended for the dance reception (including The Wobble and Copperhead Road, which I had specifically asked him to play when the bride was dancing). Guests commented that this was strange.
-During one of the few brief periods without rain before the reception, we were in the middle of outdoor family portraits and the DJ came over and insisted on talking to me at that time, which was very frustrating, as we were trying to maximize the minutes of no rain.
-He continually took requests for slow songs that killed the dance floor.
-We declined the karaoke service that he provided, but we found out that he asked some guests during the cocktail hour to do it anyway. It seemed like this DJ had his own agenda and the fact that we didn’t do everything according to his plan, did not suit him.
-As part of the DJ’s service, he provided a video of our reception. We enjoyed having this content. I will say that the DJ did it in an awkward way. A lot of times the video was in the form of a selfie with him getting himself in the video. And sometimes coming up to people and putting the video in their face. We got guest feedback that this was awkward and off-putting.
-My dad’s toast never got announced, I forgot about it too, at the time, but this was a bummer.
The initial video was nice. He emailed us multiple times to let him know if we wanted any edits and when I was “100% happy”, to please write him a positive review. I asked if he had additional coverage and he proceeded to remove the video before we had a chance to download it. He said he had a new policy and wouldn’t give us the full video until we gave him a positive review. Essentially, he held the wedding video hostage until we provided a positive review. I think this is very unprofessional and manipulative. This was the biggest reason for our 1 star review (right after the wedding, we would have given a 2/3). Btw, we eventually convinced him to provide us our video.
