Help I Just Got Engaged! What Do I Do now?

First of all Congratulations! So he finally asked you to marry him, which is wonderful. Now all those strange thoughts begin to come crashing down on you, what date, what time, where will we be married, how much can we spend, honeymoon, wedding dress, bridesmaids’ clothing, who will we get to marry us, on and on and on.

First things first, enjoy your engagement. Trust me; the rest will all come together with a little help. I am a Professional Wedding Officiate, what does that mean? Simply put, I am the one that will help you with YOUR VOWS and will preside at YOUR wedding. I am just one of the people required by law to be there. First are the Bride and Groom, then 2 witnesses, and the Officiate. I am the only one in attendance that can legally marry you. I am the only one that can finish the Marriage License and am responsible to get it to the County Clerk’s office. It gets a little more complicated than that as I also will hold your hands and help you through some of the finer points of the wedding day. The Bride and Groom will both work with me to create a ceremony that will please not only YOU, but also your guests. I also work with your Dj, Wedding Event Planner, Photographer and all of those other people involved. We always work together to make YOUR Dream Wedding come true.

Now what comes first, I LOVE this part because people usually get it wrong, then run like crazy at the last minute to solve this problem. What is it, the Venue, the Florist, the DJ, the Photographer, bet you can’t guess who should be first to be chosen. If you guessed a Professional Officiate, you are right. They are the only one that can make it a legal marriage. All the other things will fall in place with time. To me, none of those things are pressing and do not change my desire to preside at YOUR Wedding. I come to YOUR location, at the time and date established you do not need to come to me. Now I do NOT mean “John or Jane Doe the hobbyist Officiate”. I mean you should have a Professional Wedding Officiate. One that is well versed in creating your ceremony. One that can lead you comfortably with your vows. Someone who has years of experience doing weddings. Someone you can depend on to show up on YOUR wedding day.

I have lost count on how many phone calls I get because their “Officiate?” cancelled at the last minute to go do something else. Some of them come down to “can you do our wedding today”? Usually the answers they get are, Sorry, I can’t do that. So there they are everything ready to go and no one qualified to make it legal. So they wind up getting Billy Bob to get ordained on line. Everything is fine now, except Billy Bob does not have a ceremony ready to go. Now the Bride has a break down and storms off mad. The Groom goes wild on the internet looking for a ceremony. Now we have the ceremony, Billy Bob is ordained, but what if Billy Bob gets stage fright and can’t talk? OK, so finally Billy Bob stumbles through the ceremony, then runs off to get a drink of “Cool Aid”. He also forgets to come back, embarrassed I suppose, who will legally finish the Marriage License that Billy Bob forgot about? Who will see that it gets legally registered? What did you pay Billy Bob, a six pack? Do I blame Billy Bob, nope! I blame the Bride and Groom for not securing a dependable Professional Wedding Officiate early. Not quite the beautiful ceremony you expected, but it does happen.

How do you know if you have a Professional Wedding Officiate, or a “Hobbyist”? First of all look for their reviews from past Bride and Grooms. Second, if you have not been asked to pay a retainer to hold your time and date, they are NOT Professionals. Third, if you don’t have a signed contract with them, they are NOT Professionals. Forth, and final, if they don’t show up on the wedding date, they are NOT Professionals. Without the retainer paid and a contract signed you have no assurance or agreement with them. In Lane County Oregon a court house wedding costs $100.00 and they only do them at certain times and days. Expect to pay a fair price for a Professional Wedding Officiate.
