The Houston Club provided a great venue for our 300 or so guests. It is an old "oil-mans'" club, so everything has a very classic, old, downtown feel. My husband and I brought in a lot of bright color for our reception, and it was a nice mix of classic and fun/modern. The food is great, fancy without being stuffy...the salmon carving station was a hit. Overall, it was a good place...they seat up to 850 in their largest ballroom, a RARITY for downtown reception venues.
Zhna (the owner and cake baker/designer) is extremely open to your ideas and very helpful. Their studio is homey, comfortable, and they have lots of ideas, which they're excited to share. We did a custom music cake, very personal, and we'd found that NO baker in Houston was willing to either 1)bake the cake well without paying less than $10/slice or 2)be open to our ideas and willing to make the cake exactly how we'd like. Zhna is extremely kind and fun to work with, and their prices are VERY REASONABLE!! We also had a replica of my husband's guitar made into the groom's cake, and it looked (and tasted...) amazing!
We were so glad to work with Artisan, and plan to use them for special birthdays/anniversaries in the future. If you're looking for a great deal and no compromise on artistry or quality, call them!
Weddings by Debbie is one of the only bridal shops in the Houston area that has all of their dresses out of the bags, so you can actually see, touch and get an idea of what the dresses look like. They have reasonable prices and VERY helpful staff. The only 2 complaints I have are: 1. Bridal "stuff" is sooo expensive, so just keep that in mind. You don't have to buy everything from the bridal shop...have a friend/relative make the veil, for example, and save yourself $300+. But that is just the business...not Weddings by Debbie's fault. 2. The Alterations Dept. is very busy (like the entire operation), so you have to book WAY ahead of time to get any little alteration done...that is understandable. What is not understandable is the lady who heads up the phones and appointment booking...she is really BAD about mis-scheduling people and forgetting details to tell the head seamstress. Just an FYI, because other than that, this is a WONDERFUL store. Overall, the experience was really good.
My husband and I are lovers of music and, therefore, couldn't find a live band to play the broad range of music styles that we wanted played. We thought a DJ was the next best route. Pete, the owner, met with us a few times and was very receptive to our ideas...on paper. He wrote down all that we wanted played and, of course, asked him to add in a few songs based on what the crowd wanted.
When it came to the ACTUAL RECEPTION, Pete must have decided it was his own reception, because he played a total of 10 songs that we asked for. Don't get me wrong, everyone had fun and most everyone danced, but it was just a little disappointing to not get what we payed for. He also played the wrong live version of our First Dance song, so -instead of a nice calm song- it was one with crowds cheering and not-so-smooth. It's just a detail, but he's not super cheap and has been around for a while, so we expected a little more.
