WR: How to address check to new Mr & Mrs?

Hi! Cousin is getting married this evening. Is it okay to address the check to Mr. & Mrs John Doe? Or should I just address it to him? I don't want them having trouble cashing the check! Thanks for your input ladies!!!

Thanks 2nd bride! I have a wedding in two weeks and I was wondering the same thing, so you helped me out a lot! I know that the couple already has a joint account so I will go with the or option with the brides maiden name.

*Note to self- give Visa gift cards, not checks so the couple doesn't have to deal with this crap*

When I got married before, I don't remember any problems cashing checks- just the bank putting holds on them and the money wasn't released until we got home from out honeymoon- despite what the person who opened the account told us...

Sharon: Ha! I can see how that would be important.

Meghan: Well, I did like getting checks rather than gift cards, because it was easy to deposit them into savings. Is it possible to "deposit" Visa gift cards easily?

True- but I can use gift cards to buy groceries if I want. But I agree- it's easier to deposit checks and put them away for savings.

I would write it to just "cash." If the check is in a card you can put the bride and grooms name on the envelope to make it personable. I had someone write Mr. & Mrs. and we aren't married yet. I had fiance sign it and I did not sign it and the bank took it for a deposit into my account. I didn't think they would because my mother who used to work at a bank (many years ago) told me they shouldn't.

We had several checks made out to "Mr. and Mrs. New Last Name", and I had to take a few hours off work to go to my husband's bank with him with our certified marriage license in order to deposit them!

Make sure to address the check to only one person with their current name, or to use "or" (Mr. Current Name *OR* Mrs. Current Name)!

Unfortunately, that way could cause problems for the couple. If they are at a local bank, they may be fine, but a large bank in a big city may not accept it if the names are wrong compared to the names on the account. I've read horror stories. I've read that the word "and" requires both couples to sign the check and if the woman's name is wrong, they may not accept it. I also worry that maybe the woman isn't changing her name, or they're making up a new name, in which addressing it to them in your way would be wrong. I've never personally known anyone with problems, but I'd hate to be the cause. I don't usually give checks to avoid this! Just gifts!
