Pre-Cana today!

Jade, on February 1, 2015 at 8:34 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11

Today we're going in for our pre-cana class. Due to FH crazy schedule we cant take regular classes with other couples & have to go to a private session w/us & the counselor. Im pretty bummed out about it & really wish we could have the experience of meeting a bunch of couples & sharing/learning with them.

Has anyone else taken pre-cana private or regular classes? How did you guys like it?

Lol no worries, It was actually really great & gave us some wonderful tools for marriage & life in general. FH isnt Catholic either but in order to get married in the church we have to take the classes.

    Thanks anyways!

My 1st husband passed away 15yrs ago, we did private pre Cana classes, I don't remember there being another option for us. I loved it. I can't remember exactly, but I know we met with the Priest 3-4times before we were married.

My FH is not Catholic & this time I am not getting married in the Church. I do miss not having the pre Cana classes. I was actually thinking about going to Barnes & Noble & getting a workbook to do ourselves. I guess I am more traditional than I like to admit lol.

Enjoy your classes & time together!

Thank you @McKony , we had to do the private ones b/c of his schedule, were we live there are 3 different options of how to do it, 2 day class w/other couples, 4 night classes with other couples, or the private class. It was actually really nice that it was just us, we really got to focus on the things we needed & what was important to us (which my mom said she didnt feel like she got when she did the group class years ago). The class wasn't with our priest, it was with a marriage counselor and now we have some follow up meetings with our priest to further prep us.

The book that our marriage counselor suggested was called "Why marriages succeed of fail" by John Gottman. we actually ordered it as soon as we got home.

We loved our pre-cana. We didn't do private but I imagine it will be the same. We learned a lot about each other. They had you ask and answer question that maybe you haven't though of before to your SO, they also discussed topics that relate to marriage. We liked it!

Our pre cana classes were a big group of couples. There were very few instances where anyone shared with the group. For the most part, it was about communicating with your SO. I feel like you will get the same thing out of it whether it's a group or just you.

FI and I had it a few weeks ago (the regular group class). Going into it we were majorly dragging our feet, but we actually ended up having a lot of fun! We heard horror stories from some people that kind of had us nervous, but the couple that did ours was so open minded and funny. It was really informative for certain topics like finances and how intimacy after marriage gets stronger every day. It really made a huge impact on my FI, which I never expected because he is not very religious (but is Catholic).

I'm so glad to hear everyone's great Pre-cana stories!

We had such an amazing time & it was really an eye opening experience for us, I'm glad ours was private because we were able to go through the FOCCUS exercise question by question and address the areas where our responses didn't necessarily match up.

I would Highly recommend it to anyone! Any any couples in NY looking for someone look up Peter McFadden, he was really amazing!

We did the retreat weekend. I too was looking forward to meeting the other local Catholic couples, but the retreat is almost totally focused on your relationship, so you actually only talk to the other couples at meal times. Most really didn't want to interact either. The retreat was amazing and I recommend it to everyone, but you aren't missing out on any socializing by having private sessions. Just promise each other to be 100% honest with every answer. It was a great foundation for me to learn to not hold anything back when talking with my DH.
