Is it ok to register for furniture?

Andrea, on June 1, 2011 at 11:35 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 14

My fiance and I are moving to a bigger place and we just dont have the furniture to fill it. We are thinking of registering for some smaller furniture items like a futon for the guest room and an outdoor dining set for the patio. I have heard some people say that it is faux pas to register for furniture but I am not sure if that applies to smaller, less expensive items.

When we went to Bed, Bath and Beyond they told us to register for some higher priced items, that people might get together to and buy us one of the higher priced items. We did it, but we don't expect anyone to buy it for us.

You can do it, but I'm not sure anyone is going to be able to buy that, let alone ship it to you

A futon might go well on your registry as you can get those for 150.. but anything bigger might be tacky and not going to get it.

my cousin had a $200 mixer on her list she really wanted but no one was going to spend that sure they gave her cash that was more per preson then that but i think the prefernce of many is to buy things 100 or under or to just give cash

it also depends on your guest. is it something your family's can afford? were can your register for furniture?

I agree. We did it but will be pleasantly surprised if anyone even considers it (even as a joint gift) much less purchase it.

Check out my registry site....this is how I chose to register for furniture.

    http://cahillandco.mydagsite.com/

Just select the registry button from the main page. The woman who owns the site is very helpful and friendly. She even sent me a handwritten letter to comgratulate me on my engagement. I highly reccomend this site!

You could do it, just don't be expecting anyone to actually buy the higher priced stuff. They may just give money to help towards it... but I would make sure you also have some lower priced items on there as well for the guests who don't want to give money, but don't want to buy the higher priced furniture. If you don't add in the lower cost items, you are leaving it up to them to pick and decide and you may not like it or get what you want.

Although I am not done creating my registry, I just got it started online -- I did put a $500 tv on there for our living room. I am not expecting anyone to actually buy this though. But perhaps they will give money to help us buy it.

...your guests have the option to contribute a portion of the total cost for the piece of furniture instead of out-right buying the whole thing (which most people couldn't afford, as a wedding gift)

I'd be very careful about it. Personally, I wouldn't register for any item over $100. However, if you want furniture from places that you can register at, ty reigstering for gift cards! You can have it spread by word of mouth (parents and bridal party) that you are hoping to buy some furniture soon after the wedding, since you are just starting out your home- and cash/gift cards would be much appreciated.

I wouldn't do it, a friend of mine have been encouraging me to register at Ikea, I might but it definitely won't be for furniture, IMO, there shouldn't be anything over $150 on the registry and much less anything where they have to pay additional fees on.

I'd say put a few gifts cars on there, sometime people will get the hint and give you gift cards so you can use them to buy your furniture later.

I think it's fine to put a few bigger ticket items on your registry. But like people said- don't expect people to buy them- unless you have a rich aunt who is known for huge gifts (I know someone whose grandma got their parents (and their aunt and uncle) a 55" flat screen HDTV for Christmas).

Just make sure you have like 80% of your registry under $100 an item.

Sure you can! Especially if the registry offers a discount to the couple to purchase remaining items after the wedding. I'm pretty sure Crate & Barrel offers 10% off after the wedding. I also discovered a house registry kind of like honeyfund.com it's Hatchmyhouse.com. I'm almost positive we'll be going this route! You don't have to choose specific items, you just create different price points for guests to purchase. Then you get a lump sum in your Paypal account to go shopping with.

FH and I joke about this.. we really would prefer money for our honeymoon, but we joke that we should only register for super expensive furniture that we like so that we'll either get honeymoon money OR a super cool peice of furniture!! lol but I've never known anyone to actually get furniture for their wedding unless a parent were to have purchased it.. I'm the one who gets a coffee grinder (but I throw in my own little touch with matching mugs!)

Yes! Anything and everything! People will only buy what they can afford or want anyways so it doesn't hurt to do it! it's not like you're making anyone buy you furniture! We have a kitchen table and TV on ours! =)

I think one of the first major expenses you'll have as a newly wed is furniture. I'd say go for it. Getting brand new furniture taken care of by your friends and family, especially if it's purchased online and delivered for free. I know that Emfurn is pretty open to these sort of things. I recently remodelled a vacation home and I got $500 off. I'd imagine a newly married couple would appreciate having an extra $500 for those unexpected expenses.
