do it yourself

kefitz2008, on October 30, 2009 at 6:39 AM Posted in Planning 0 23

So i am looking up ways to make things myself. since i am a very crafty person and so is my mom, we were hoping to make a starlit backdrop for pictures and everything ourselves since we are good with sewing and everything. i k now i want some christmas lights behind it or some LED depending on how expensive they are. anyone know how to or of any good websites i could go to so i could see how they are made?

Sorry I couldn't be more help but from what I read, why not just get some star fabric, I'm not crafty so bare with me, lol, and figure out something for the edging, maybe have lights behind it?

I was thinking you could get star fabric and on the stars cut a little hole in each star or just random ones*that would be A LOT of lights if you did every one* then stitch the lights to the back so it dont fall! http://www.save-on-crafts.com/candleshoppe.html i love this idea! i think im foing to try it! heck that would be cool wall paper for my bedroom lol!

I'm not sure if they'll have an idea on how to make the backdrop you want, but www.marthastewartweddings.com has a lot of DIY ideas on a ton of things.

I make all my own backdrops and rent them. They are not cheap to make. However, I am willing to give you some pointers. How high is the ceiling behind your head table? Are you looking for a curtain with twinkle lights behind it? If you look at my website, you will see some of the backdrop styles I have. If I know how high and how wide your space is, I can recommend some DIY ideas.

Yeah i was thinking about just getting some star fabric and using christmas lights and sew them to the back and cut a hole randomly on the stars and stick the lights through. that would work maybe? thanks for all the help!! i appreciate it!

mj decorations...the ceiling is around 10-12 feet tall and i dont even know how long behind the head table. i need to measure before i do anything. i was also thinking it would be cheaper to make than to rent one. im thinking about some twinkle lights but that would add more to the cost probably. im going to check out these ideas and any pointers you have would be greatly appreciated!!

A way to save money is to buy up the Christmas light after Christmas when they go on sale! I think you can save ton's of money that way!

I would look for the Christmas lights at Joann Fabrics about a week before Christmas. They will probably be on a pretty good sale by then. Also, try Walmart right after Christmas. They'll be marked down and I'm sure they'll have enough left over. The nice thing is, with white Christmas lights, you can buy all different brands where ever you find them on sale at and it won't matter because they're all the same anyway.

Another idea is to check e-bay for a "starfield laser". It projects a starfield pretty much like the picture above with hundreds laser dots. They sell for about $200 and come from China, but are VERY cool. I just bought one, and it looks awesome!

3.6.10Bride, awesome idea! i know what you mean about them all being the same. i was wondering, however, how much fabric and how many bundles of christmas lights. i guess it all depends on how big the area its going on will be. hmm anything else i need? like whats going to hold it up? wood?

tyrone blue entertainment, can you tell me more about these starfield lasers, like what it looks like. you said it looks like the picture above, but does it look exactly like it, different, do i need fabric behind it, etc. and which would be cheaper you think, making a backdrop or one of those lasers?

Log onto e-bay. Many of the vendors who sell these units have YouTube videos attached to their auctions. All of them are based in China, so it will take several weeks to get one if you win the auction or do the "buy it now". These are normally used by DJ's who aim them at the ceiling, and the laser covers the ENTIRE ceiling with literally hundreds of dots and the "cloud" rippling effect. It looks just like a starry sky. They are becoming VERY popular with high end DJ companies. Using the laser takes some practice with the effect you want. You can either set it for "stand alone" mode where it does it's own thing, or add a controller, and make it do exactly what you want it to... The controller is how I use it, but you need to know how to run the controller. You can get all of the variations in my group of pictures in my post (two up).

You can also get net lighting (christmas lights that you put in a bush) there will be less cords, get a couple of nets , hnand them on the wall and cover it with a sparkle tulle or regular tulle the sparkle tulle will a but more depth to the sparkes. good luck

Kay, that's a great idea, I was going to suggest the clear tube lights to make it easier, but that idea's even better!
