Different bridesmaid dresses...?

I was just wondering if it would either be tacky or interesting to let each of my bridesmaids pick their own dresses. We would probably go to David's Bridal and I would definitely choose the color that the dresses have to be. I think it looks good on the David's Bridal website, but I have no idea...

I think it looks good on the David's Bridal website, but I have no idea how it looks in person. Does anyone have any opinions and/or suggestions?

I picked the color, the fabric and they length, but I let my girls choose what fit them best. Not everyone looks good in the same dress, and I wanted each girl to feel comfortable and beautiful. My whole thing was that I didn't want them to look like bridesmaids....I wanted them to shine on their own. Congrats and good luck!

Honey, go for it. This is the 21 century. We do things different now.

Be original and creative but inside of the wedding theme and appropiate for the occation. Oh, yeah, and don't forget that you should be the prettiest one of all. That's it.

I did the same thing I love the idea of letting the my girls pick a dress that they love. I let them pick out their dresses and had them ordered in the same color and fabric It looks amazing! I feel like if my girls love their dress they will be comfortable and more inclined to have fun! and they can use it another time! Congrats! looking for dresses is lots of fun! Smiley smile

I really like that idea, because knowing that your bridesmaids are not all the same size, and do not like the same styles. What looks great on one person may be hideous on another. This will allow your bridesmaids to pick their own style and something thats in their price range. As long as you approve of the dresses before your bridesmaids purchase them. I've planned many weddings where the bridesmaids had on different dresses and the pictures were beautiful.

Same here. Because of different sizes, I want my bridesmaids to be comfortable. I just picked the color and the length.

I'm doing it. One girl is bigger and the other is smaller than me so I know one dress isn't going to do it for both of them. I do have a few crieteria: they have to be from the same designer and ordered at the same time to ensure the dye lots are the same (what's chocolate one day might be mocha the next!!)

I think it is a wonderful idea. I am actually doing the same thing for my wedding. I've picked out the color, the material, and the store. All the bridesmaids have to do is choose which dress best fit their body type.

That is definetly a cool idea. I am doing something like that. I am doing the "seperates" dresses. Where it looks like one dress but its actually a top and bottom. I picked the bottom because I want everyone to have the same length dress but I am letting them pick their tops. This works well because I have so many differant shapes, sizes, and ages. So everyone is happy! However, I suggest going with them to make sure it is something you are comfertable with as well. Good luck!

Not at all. my sister's wedding was last May. her colors were pink and brown. The Jr. bridesmaids had the same dresses, then the 2 bridesmaids had the same dress and then me being the MOH, I had a different dress. Everyone loved it. It made her pictures really stand out.

Actually, this is very popular. The ladies can choose figure flattering styles and ones that they can wear to some other occasions. Just make sure when you are all having your meeting and shopping day to "browse", that you keep in mind what the pictures will look like when you are all together and picture the flowers against the dresses. Spending a lot of money on beautiful bouquets of red roses, for example, against red dresses would be sad because they would not show well in the pictures. Think also about length of each dress and then heel size. So many details, but then that is what the wedding planner is best at........

My only suggestion, to reemphasize an earlier post, is have a suggested length- full length or tea length just so that the dresses coordinate better. And I've been in two weddings this past year where the bride's opted not to do this and believe me, even a cute dress doesn't always come of as cute on different body styles. I think this is a great idea, which I am also doing. We ended up narrowing it down to 2 styles though because 4/5 were deciding between the same two dresses which coordinated very well so I let them pick from those two. David's bridal did work well for this!

I think it look really nice. Im doing the same thing. I picked the color and my bridesmaids are going to pick the same fabric, which is satin. The girl at the store said that different material might have a different shade. I think that should be fine if all the bridesmaids are going to Davids bridal.

That is so nice of you. They will be really happy, especially if they are paying for it and all have different or difficult body types. Make sure the lengths are the same. I think that looks better. Even different shades, but same manufacturer and material might look interesting. It depends how matchy matchy or not that you want to get.

I love the idea, in fact I am using it in my wedding!! The only thing I am telling them is black. I don't care about length, neckline, fabric, etc. I want them to be as happy as they have made me and to love to wear that dress again!

I was recently a BM in a friend’s wedding and she let all 4 of us pick out our own dress. She sent us her favorite picks from Alfred Angelo and the 2 colors she liked. The rest was up to us! It turned out beautiful and she received many compliments, some guests said it was like watching a fashion show! Good Luck Smiley winking

I think it's a great idea. I've seen it and been in weddings that did this. There are two things I've noticed are downers about it though: 1) if it's not all the same fabric, they may look like slightly different colors! Ex: a blue silk dress looks lighter than the same blue dress in chiffon. 2) If two girls want the same dress...drama will commence! This can be diffused by sending out an email once someone has chosen theirs, it'll get them to go pick it out and order it faster! My favorite with this idea was a wedding where the bride picked the color and we all got the same skirt but each picked out a different top to fit our body type. (same color again) It looked very cool. Good luck!

This works well if your bridesmaids are all considerate & respect that the day is about pleasing the bride, not themselves. My daughter picked her color scheme & choose 3 coordinating colors at David's Bridal, only requesting that her bridesmaids pick a long dress in one of the 3 colors. I thought she was being considerate of her friends, but they complained about the styles available in the 3 colors, put off buying their dresses, & her MOH just couldn't manage to get a full length dress. They finally did get dresses in one of the 3 chosen colors, after I sent an email saying I coordinated everything for the wedding around these colors & would be eternally grateful if they stuck with them. The rest of the bridal party & some guests wore long gowns, & MOH walked down the aisle in a tea length dress & a nose ring hanging out both sides of the middle of her nose. The wedding was still beautiful, but this girl was very self centered. I hope your bridal party will be more considerate of you.
