Cobalt men's wedding bands?

MzRosaLu, on April 20, 2015 at 8:28 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12

Is there anyone here whose FH chose a cobalt wedding band (or any other alternative metal)? FH is really drawn to a cobalt ring because he wants an 8 mm (he's a big guy!) and they are harder to find in gold. Just wondering if there are any drawbacks to having a ring that isn't gold? (I'd rather hear real-life experiences than just relying 100% on what the jeweler says, because I know they have to make a sale either way). Thanks!

We originally bought the Colbolt and then were told it couldn't be sized. The lady we take our stuff to get cleaned/ fixed told us that the Colbalt is actually pretty fragile. She told us her son has gone through 3 of them! We went with white gold and my man loves it!

Most of the alternative metals can't be re-sized from what I understand. FH and I went with a Tungsten ring for him (which btw is VERY durable if your FH works with his hands, out jeweler guy told us he was hitting his against something metal -out of frustration, i don't really remember the story-and ended up denting metal and not really damaging the ring at all) I went with white god for mine. I've heard all over the board that tungsten is a good metal for guys that work hard bc the tungsten can withstand the pressure, unlike other metals.

Like I said before, the only drawback to the alternative metals seems to be not being able to have it re-sized, you'd have to buy a whole other ring

Ugh @Miss Katie...3 rings? That's terrible! We've read that cobalt is scratch resistant but didn't know it was so fragile.

Thanks @Kassie...so far FH hasn't been too crazy about the tungsten rings we've seen, but we'll keep looking.

@MzRosa- No problem, I wasn't overly fond of them myself until he and I agreed on one that was a bit similar to mine in pattern.

Am all for plain and simple band for the groom. FH wants to have some non-traditional wedding band too... Am not letting him cos I rather he looks married and not fashionable... but that's just me. lol

However, I love cobalt. its one of our colors Smiley smile

We went with cobalt, purchased from Blue Nile. My H is the opposite - smaller hands and the larger mm rings looked ridiculous, but we still ended up with a 6mm because we liked the material. We wanted something that kept its color/shine and was extremely scratch resistant. FH works out a lot and plays golf often, and I knew that he wouldn't be great at removing his ring. It can't be resized, but when we paid less than $150 for it, I won't sweat if he loses it or his weight changes. So far, he's obsessed with it! And I was right about him not taking it off.

I bought a tungsten band for FH.

    Cons: It can't be resized

Pros: Super low in price (his was $20 Canadian) and it's almost as strong as diamond so it's great if he works with his hands.

I would suggest making sure he gets his finger sized at a few different places. From what I've seen a lot of alternative metal bands are comfort fit.

@MzRosaLu I think I was actually wrong before. I think it was the tungsten we looked at. It's true it can't be resized but the place we bought it from said it was resilient and the jeweler, who cleans our stuff, did say her son broke 3 of them. Not really sure what is trueSmiley sad

@Joy, that's funny because FH actually told the jeweler, "I want to look married, I don't want to just look like I'm wearing a ring." Haha. The cobalt best mimics the look of white gold in color. Thanks for all of your responses, everyone!

We did a custom design for my FH in platinum. He got mine in platinum so we wanted them to match and they're durable and will last forever. He really liked having a solid weight and wanted a heavy ring. It was definitely not cheap but I don't think he'll lose it. I got him an "engagement" ring to wear this past year and he loves wearing a ring and he has had no problem with it falling off or anything. He doesn't use his hands for much so I am not worried. However the engagement ring I got him is tungsten-carbide. It can't be re-sized but it's solid and looks like white gold. A lot of the tungsten ones were a dark metal color but I found some on Amazon that weren't so dark. He really likes it.
