About Us
David W. Coulter, www.davidwcoulterphotography.com,  began studying photography formally at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh in 1978. He had his first magazine assignment in 1979, photographing neighborhood boxing gyms, the young men learning to box and their trainings showing them the ropes. After school, David moved to New York City, where he worked with Eva Rubinstein and Duane Michals as a freelance photographers’ assistant. With Eva, he helped finish a limited edition fine art portfolio and exibit for the Neikrug Gallery. With Duane he assisted on a wide variety of projects, from fine art to editorial and advertising.
In 1982, David joined the staff of the Pocono Record newspaper, a small paper in his hometown, Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. After a sixteen year stint with the newspaper, David turned to freelance commercial photography in 1998. He works mainly on location, but also photographs in his home studio in Henryville, PA. David works mainly with advertising and marketing departments for colleges and corporations, as well as with business people with a wide variety of photography needs. He photographs architecture, interiors for resorts, outdoor activities of people, aerial views of properties. To see some samples of this aspect of David W. Coulter Photography, go to www.davidwcoulter.com.
About 1984, David was asked to photograph the wedding of two friends in Delaware Water Gap. This was the first of hundreds of weddings David has photographed in his signiture photojournalistic style. In the beginning, it was all B&W film, and now it’s all digital, which has resulted in an unexpected amount of freedom. When shooting digitally, the main expense is time. When you shoot more you have to spend more time editing. That can be looked at as an expense or it can be looked at as more time in the classroom, evaluating the photography and determinig what is working well. The benefits are clearly an ever improving shooting style and better photography to the client.
In addition to David's specialty of wedding photojournalism, David photographs commitment ceremonies, where a bit of extra discretion and sensitivity may be warranted.
David continues to work from his home studio, spending time studying his photography and enjoying his family.
