Zola? Other third-party-like registries? Experience? Advice?

Aliya, on January 5, 2015 at 7:13 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 2

(I looked before writing this and there were a few registry questions mentioning Zola, but they were old, so I am posting this new one!)

So I've started thinking about registries, and I created a Zola, because it's so easy to use and lets me bring it links from other places. But I'm starting to wonder if I really want to use a third-party versus just going to BB&B or Macys.com and just doing registries through them. I guess it is the ease of having everything in one place versus multiple sites. Has anyone used Zola all the way through and have yea/nay advice?

Things I read said that anything from another website you were given cash value for -- really? Did I miss some fine print? We don't have a combined household, he's military. But we have collected a good amount of great condition kitchen miscellaneous items from family members(free hand me downs! yay!!).

Yes! We are military and I posted about Zola a few weeks ago. I love that I have the opportunity to choose when our gifts are shipped. For that reason alone I love it. We haven't used it from beginning to end. Just last night I added a salt lamp from BB&B and it did have some weird dollar amount when it appeared on Zola. Maybe we won't get the actual salt lamps but the monetary value? I am going to get on my computer, look up our registry as a guest, and go through the motions of purchasing a third party item and see what happens. I wonder how it is presented to our guests. I wouldn't want to deceive anybody. I will update you in a few minutes

Okay... I found a downside to Zola...

****Once you add an item from another store to your registry, we’ll ask you whether you want to receive the cash value of that gift, or direct your guests to that store to buy the gift for you. You can choose whichever option you prefer on a gift by gift basis. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

If you choose to direct your guests to another site:

You'll no longer be able to return, exchange, or redeem the cash value of this gift on Zola.

You can not turn this into a group gift.

When this gift is purchased, we will notify you and will mark this gift as fulfilled on your registry so you won't receive duplicates.

This item will be shipped directly to you or the guest from the other website, and you won't be able to control the shipment.

Your guest will not check out on Zola, but will receive confirmation of a purchase from Zola.***

I suppose that's another debate entirely. I'm going to pose this to the larger group.
