You may now kiss...

Caroline, on March 13, 2017 at 5:28 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 33

I really don't feel comfortable with "you may now kiss the bride". I'm on the app so I can't search. I know I've seen great alternatives before, but can't remember! He and I are getting married to each other. I think "kiss the bride" is a little sexist. And ideas for ending the ceremony with a kiss but with saying something that equally includes us both?

Thanks so much!

You may now share your first embrace as husband and wife? ...share your first kiss as husband and wife?

How about just skipping it & having the officiant say, "I now pronounce you husband and wife," & then you can kiss?

In the same boat, but I don't have a good solution yet. Will be interested to hear what others say. At this point I'm just thinking something like "please share your first married kiss" or something like that.

I like @Mrs. Stizman's suggestion. Everything else sounds awkward to me. Although, @Grace, your suggestion is a close second lol

ETA: Ooh and I like @Nicole's too!

My officiant will say, "I now invite you to share your first kiss as husband and wife."

Just curious...Why does "you may now kiss the bride" sound sexist to you?

Sexist might have been TOO strong. I feel like it's a little old fashioned. I'm not his property that he now gets to kiss. We get to kiss each other. It might seem silly... but it's a little too virginal sounding to me.

It's sexist bc it's directing the groom only, giving him "permission" to kiss the bride. (as opposed to inviting both parties to share a kiss, e.g.)
