Wwyd? Where should i put the Dj?

EmeraldBride, on June 18, 2020 at 1:38 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 11

Thinking about doing a backyard reception and I am trying to figure out the costs associated with it. Large tents are expensive! So I had a thought.. instead of having a DJ/dance floor under the large tent... what if I housed the DJ under a smaller tent and had the dance floor in front of the small tent. It will be close to the large tent - so guests should be able to see the dancing. AND an added bonus - you're dancing under the stars Smiley love

How would you feel about this if you attended a reception like this?

I think that sounds pretty fun! but then just be mindful of needing to move it under a tent if weather changes

Unless you need the tent for intense sun or rain protection, you can get away with skipping the big tent. Usually the dj decides where they set up.

I would LOVE to skip the tent honestly. My yard is definitely shady 5-6 PM on so will possibly need some sun protection if I start earlier than that. I wonder if I can just put the tent on standby and put a deposit on the tent. I'll just lose the money if the weather is beautiful. Hmm.. definitely questions to ask the vendor Smiley smile

My sister-in-law had a background wedding and she rented two large tents. Under one tent was where everyone ate and the other was where the DJ and dancefloor were set up. It ended up pouring. Everyone ran under the tents and the dancefloor became a slip-and-slide. Personally, I would have a backup plan in case of bad weather.

I love dancing under the stars. My venue has a wooden dance floor with trees surrounding it. The actually strung up an antique chandelier and large string lights over the dance floor. I wouldn't put the whole dance floor under a tent.

From having a backyard wedding, my best advice is to check with your vendors first about their requirements ! My DJ had expensive equipment and made sure to clarify that he needed a safe space for his set up securely covered by the tent. Similarly the dance floor rental was explicitly required to be covered ! Just something to be aware of Smiley smile

I’d also consider how you’d light the space over an external dance floor— I wouldn’t mind dancing “under the stars” but I would mind dancing in the dark !

Valid thoughts! I was planning to string lights over it. Also I would assume the DJ is going to come with party lights. It will be close to the bar area which will be well lit for socializing. Someone mentioned DIYing the dance floor so it might be something I can look into if it has to be covered. Or would people be okay with dancing on grass?

Yikes, that doesn’t sound fun at all! I do have nearby pole barns that can be used as well if we had to in case of rainy weather. I just didn’t want to deal with cleaning them out for this lol.

I'm not 100% sure. It looks like they ran a metal bar between two of the trees. I attached a photo below.
