WWWWBD (what would wedding wire brides do) - Registry

Enya, on September 4, 2014 at 1:05 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 18

We've lived together for much of the last 7 years and already have a house. I'm trying to figure out the registry thing - there's some things on my Amazon wishlist (generally for the holidays) that are home related that I can easily transfer to a wedding registry on Amazon. What we *need* though is tools - our home is something we're working on so tools are super useful. Well. And money, but we obviously aren't asking for that.

I don't feel right not having a registry despite being pretty well set up; my mom and friend are already prepped with the 'they've been together for so long, la la la' lines. But I want the FH to have some fun with this too - he's been pretty involved in the details (more than I anticipated lol) but this goes against his nature (he doesn't like asking for gifts and this is definitely that)

Anyway. I guess I'll see if Lowes has a registry option (ha) and... maybe a brick store like Macy's or BBB. Is three too many? Should we skip altogether? Beg for money?

We have 2, Macys & BBB. 3 seems perfectly acceptable to me, I bet Lowes does too or do an amazon, they seem super popular.

Register for what you need and a few upgrades or fun things you wouldn't buy yourself like an automatic cocktail maker (I really hope I get that) or a fondue pot. If you keep it small people will likely get the hint and give cash.

We did 3. Our main was a BBB registry with two small others.

I second what emmy said. Keep your registries small. Lowes I believe, does have one. In fact, I think there was a bride on here who did register at Lowe's, (or maybe it was Home depot?).

I have the same issue, already own a house, so what to register for? I like your idea of tools, FH would definitely want some tools.

I will check Lowe's and Home Depot or even Harbour Freight to see if they have a registry.

    I didn't consider Sears, thanks!

Lowes discontinued their wedding registry. HD has one but it's store specific and sounds like a pain in the tookus. I'll check it out though and mainly leave this up to FH. I know we've had tools on our Amazon list that have worked out fine as well, so we might stick to that and list a few fussier things at a Brick&Mortar store

I second Sears. My FH LOVES their tools. If you did an Amazon and Sears registry you could easily register for tools.

We have 3! One at The Bay (traditional items), Royal Doulton (dishes only), and myregistry.com for random items.

Sears! If you are in the market for tools they sell Craftsmen and like every power tool in the world. My FH could spend a whole afternoon just looking at tools. They also have decent yard equipment (lawn mowers, trimmers, etc.) Then you can fill in with BBB if you are worried about people wanting to give you gifts for your "home" like sheets and towels and stuff.

(I know that Home Depot does not have an online gift registry and I think Lowes used to but not anymore.)

We live together but don't have ANYTHING. My mom lived with me before FH moved in and she is still there and probably always will be. FH is cool with that. But we don't have anything outside of what's in our room basically. We registered for BBB, Target, and Amazon. FH had a lot of fun with Amazon and added an XBox One and tool stuff for the garage workshop. We are planning on redoing our outside spaces and have a lot of stuff on our registries to help us be able to do that. Also, when we get kitchen stuff, we'll pack my mom's mismatched sets from over the years and store it, and use our new matching stuff.

We don't need a lot of stuff and most of the things we do need are super pricey. So anyways I made some smaller registries at Amazon.com (because people know how to order online from here and it had things of different price groups), we did target.com or store (because I shop here all the time). We also did Merciregistry.com which I set up as a experience registry and the more odd ball shops in our local town that don't have registries. We also provided a list of local stores (we are in a small town) that we like.

So far I think we have had 4 things bought off the registry and 1 non registry item arrived. I think most people default to Money giving when the registry isn't very big. Or they become creative and give you random things (but I am totally happy with that).

We have 3 right now, but are combining all of ours using the my registry site I put the link in below.

I dont think there is anything wrong with registering at Sears or Lowes either, we are definietly going to be doing that because what we need most is yard stuff, we have nothing other than a lawn mower! Also, we only have one screw driver, and the only hammer we have is one I made in shop class in High School. So we have been hurting for the same thing. When I talked to my family who is super traditional they told me to upgrade my kitchen plates so they all match (we are going to pick our favorite set of existing plates and build on them and donate the rest), ask for towel sets for when we have guests over, and then ask for tools.

    Edit: Forgot the promised link.

    Nice!

I love amazon - i mean. I dislike their policies, but shopping is super easy. My FMIL is... completely incapable of using it though which kind of worries me (helping her with the details of the destination wedding stuff has been... comical. kinda. so amazon is right out)

I transferred some stuff off my personal list to the registry so that was cool (super easy zomg) and FH has the link in his inbox to go nuts with tools. I'll talk to him about Sears as well. I think my personal preference is just two registries. I think. I have some time to change my mind lol.

We're honestly not expecting anyone who goes to the DW to give things and the folks who don't go aren't exactly swimming in extra money so I'll make sure to put small items on there a plenty. I... It's hard to balance the desire for gifts with the reality of how frugal my life is.

Home Depot has a really annoying registry (you have to register and everyone has to shop at the same storeSmiley tongue)

We actually registered for tools on our amazon registry (FH wanted a new miter saw and nicer drill press)

Yeah, initially I wanted to be super gauche and just beg for gift cards and money but a southern friend talked me around to a nicer way to ask for these things. The small registry works and the things we're adding are for the home and us. If they come through! Awesome! if they don't I'll be all sad panda for a day and then pull up my big girl panties and get on with life Smiley smile

(we did a huge kitchen reno last year, phase 1 of a three part project and at the end of the first phase i went and bought a whole bunch of new stuff like matching [gasp] plates and silverware because i was tired of the mismatch baloney and people *sharing* silverware when everyone was at our house for a long weekend)

(thankfully the sharing folks are couples. but still. my inner hostess cried a lot)

FH and I talked about this too. Bummer to hear about Home Depot. We are going to do tackle the bathroom post wedding and thought to register for some gift cards, tools there. We have lived separately (11 for me, 6 for him) and we have a lot of stuff. I want to skip a shower but everyone keeps telling us to have one.
