www.themonastery.org... legitimate?

Justin, on January 3, 2016 at 5:27 PM Posted in Planning 0 5

I will be officiating a wedding for friends soon. I am in California and I understand that I don't have to register or anything like that. But is the site legit? I've been referred to "Universal Life Church" but www.ulc.org and www.themonastery.org use that name.

THanks for any help

Hey Justin - I'd reach out to the county clerk's office where you will be officiating and get them to weigh in on this. You definitely want to make sure everything is legal!

Call your clerk. The ordination doesn't make the officiant, but it does make the wedding legal.

Thanks for the responses. I have called the county clerk and they did not specify what site is and is not legitimate. California is apparently very lax about it. I was just hoping someone has experience getting ordained by ULC.

The two organizations seem to have a feud with each other. However, for your purposes, a jurisdiction that accepts one is likely to accept the other. So the real question to ask the clerk is whether they accept online ordinations.

The one problem is that clerks can't always tell you. In some states, a marriage is clearly invalid if performed by someone ordained online. In some, it is clearly valid. But in many, there have been no court cases on the subject, so your marriage could be invalidated years later by some judge.

If you don't want to take the risk, one alternative to consider in California is the "Deputy Marriage Commissioner for a Day" program. Information on it can be found at:
