Wrong ring size

Erin, on March 9, 2017 at 7:36 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11

So, I used to think my ring size was a 5 3/4 (which is what a jeweler told me in the past). My fiancee got a size 6 for this reason, but it was huge. I went to a jeweler to get it sized, and they sized me down to a 5. Now, it is way too tight when my finger swell, to the point where it's either stuck on or off, and hurts on. My fiancee is already worried about having them resize once, but I really think I need to go back. I'm scared that I will get the wrong size again. My hands swell and thin pretty drastically so I'm afraid I'll always wish I had a different size. It was perfect when I had thread around the band prior to getting it sized. How do I make sure I get the correct size so I don't have to have it sized again and again, potentially affecting the integrity of the ring? Help!

I'm also a 5 3/4.. and size 6 feels huge on me. I can't get a 5 1/2 off though. I'd stick with your original size so you have room if your fingers swell.

My hands fluctuate a lot too depending on the time of year, temp, humidity, if I've been drinking, etc.

My fiancé initially got me a 5.75 and it was falling off, so it was taken in to a 5.25. I wanted a straight 5 and the jeweler said no because of the fluctuation. I am so glad he did because the 5.25 has ended up being perfectly in the middle of loose and too tight depending.

I'd ask him one more time about adjusting it. If anything, go a tad bigger and get the ring adjustment balls or attachment things to keep it more snug in the cooler months and whatnot.

They did measure my finger, but I think my fingers were cold and thin when they measured. My FH ordered a ring sizer that will be here tomorrow. I plan on wearing around the sizer rings in different sizes when my fingers are thin and when they swell throughout the day to see what's most comfortable. I want to have a little wiggle room, but definitely don't want it sliding off my finger when I'm cold. At least the jeweler said they would fix it free. My ring was from a private jeweler out of NYC too, but also went to a local private jeweler. I was too scared to send it back to NYC and have to wait. At least the local jeweler is incredibly nice and seems accommodating. Fingers crossed the next sizing ends up being perfect!

I was sized at a 4.5 by a jeweler, but I know my hands swell during the summer so FH got a ring that a 4.75 and it's perfect.

I've heard going in the middle of the day is the most accurate because your finger will be the most swollen...My engagement ring was ordered a quarter size too big just in case it was too small (measurements were done off an older ring), but it was too big and felt like it was going to fall off when I washed my hands, so I got it resized. With the current size, when my finger is swollen, it is difficult to get off but most of the time, it's fine.

So my ring is a size 4. When my hands swell it is tight enough that it's tough to get off, but not stuck or uncomfortable, and when my fingers (unswell? lol) are smaller it's just a little loose. It'll come off easily, but feels secure and may twist a little but not too badly. I have huge knuckles so frankly no idea why it fits so beautifully. I went to a chain store. Can I mention the name or is it against the rules?

You should just get sizing beads, that way your finger has room when it swells and doesn't feel uncomfortable.

It sounds like you should maybe size to 5.5. I'm usually a 4.75, but H got me a 5 because he misheard. I ended up sizing it to 4.5 and it fits perfectly at rest, it's only a tad snug when my fingers swell, and it's spinning loose when my fingers are cold but not to the point of falling off.

Ask about sizing beads once you have the ring enlarged again. The jeweler can add them to a ring that's slightly too big and it balances the weight so it won't spin and won't feel like it can easily slide over the knuckle, but still can if you need it to.

My ring is a 4, but I'm considering having it sized up half a size so that it's not too tight with a band on. So that's something to consider as well. My jewelry recommended sizing up half a size if you're planning on wearing a band, and especially if you're planning on having them soldered together. Good luck!
