Writing Your Own Vows

Allie, on March 1, 2021 at 10:22 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 1 15

I just started to organize my thoughts and write down my vows for my wedding this November. Of course, I've written my vows in my head a thousand times and they all sounded great, and now that it's time to actually put them on paper I am drawing a blank. So, for those of you who wrote their own vows, what did you include? Right now I have some memories from when we first met and then started dating, some of my favorites moments throughout our relationship, some of the attributes he has that I admire, and what I'm promising to him. I'm really looking to tie it all up together and struggling! Inspo is greatly appreciated!

I've actually been thinking about my own vows for the past couple weeks! I started a draft of it, and anytime I think of something else I want to add, I update it. I've been using the questions listed in this article as a guide, it's been fairly helpful so far! https://www.theknot.com/content/how-to-write-your-own-wedding-vows From the info you listed it sounds like you've got a great start to your vows!

Took examples from a google search and made kind of packet for me and my FH. I have made 2 drafts will probably be 3 or 4. The first one I just kinda wrote things down, the 2nd was more structured and the 3rd will combine parts of both. I never realized how hard it was cause like you said, I'm drawing blanks. I can think about it all day but when I go to write it, I'm struggling.

Oh that's a great tool to have! Thank you! I'm trying, I have quite a bit of time but I also have all of these ideas that I want to record down somewhere too.

I did a Google search too to try and get some kind of idea on how to put them together. I'll probably re-write them like a million times haha. It is hard!! I walk around the house reciting things I want to say to him, but then when I actually have to put it all together and make it sound good, it's such a struggle!

I included promises or goals I wanted to make and keep, why I love him, etc

I started mine off with a little snippet about how I'm grateful to have someone that loves me completely, and how he feels like home.

The actual vows are just promises and goals I had. I took a look at my personality and what I could personally change to make our life together easier. I also added a few in there that were comical, like promising to not hit every hole on the golf course when I drive the golf cart for him lol.

It's SO TOUGH to put your feelings into words, but you can do it!

I started mine off with all of the things I love about him and what he means to me. Then led into the promises/vows, most of them serious and a couple personal lighthearted ones. What helped me a lot was making a note on my phone of the idea I had the instant I got it. I also sat down for my first draft and listed everything I wanted to mention before turning them into actual ideas. So all of my favorite things about him, little moments/stories, promises. From there I turned them into sentences, some of which I re-worded a million times to get it just right. It took about 4 drafts to get mine exactly where I wanted it to be.

Also, someone mentioned Google and they really do have great examples for structuring vows! I read a few before putting mine together and it really helps

That's really sweet! I sort of did the same, I added some things I was promising that were serious and some that were funny, like sharing more of the folded potatoes with him because the folded ones are my favorite. It is tough! I'm actually kind of a writer too, I used to write poems and short stories and actually was published once, but this for some reason is so much harder than those!

Don't feel bad! I like to get stuff done REALLY early, I have a Type A personality! Some of the best vows I've heard had been done the night before because it was an expression of how that person was feeling right before they got married!

Omg same here!! I already know my vows are going to be a lot more romantic and better written than his, but that makes it so special! You get to experience both the bride's and groom's take on vows.

Find out what the legal verbage is for your state. Then instead of memories, focus on promises to each other. A Google search for vows will give you ideas. You can share memories in a personal card.
