Writing vows: I suck at it.

L + A, on April 13, 2015 at 12:35 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 20

I'm getting started on my vows now, since FH and I are writing our own, but I'm struggling to write them! I'm not sure where to start, and all I'm coming up with is funny things.

Any advice, or places for inspiration?

Funny isn't bad! That's a great place to start! Just keep asking yourself what you want to commit yourself to for the rest of your life, where your FH falls into that, and how to make it feel like it comes from your heart. You've got this Smiley smile

It took me all the way up until the week of to finalize mine. I had a really difficult time trying to figure out how to make them what I wanted them to be. I basically started out with a bit of back story "if you had asked me 10 years ago if I'd be marrying my first kiss and high school crush.." etc etc, and then went into how grateful i am to know him and be loved by him, proud to become his wife, then turned it into my promises to him. I was actually SO thrilled with my final product.

Ugh, I started mine at midnight before the wedding- so you are already in a better place then I was! I went funny and he went serious. I say this as a joke because I *know* that it's not a competition... but he totally won on the vow writing Smiley winking

I wish I had gone a bit more serious. I really think it comes down to your personally, and what you want to say to him.

Writing our own vows was the only request FH had with the ceremony, wierd right!? It's usually the girl requesting those things! I kind of made mine saying all these things I promise. I started with sweet, added a few funny things to make myself laugh so I wouldnt cry when I finish out with all the sentimental promises.

I actually did work in a few humorous things. And I kept it short. Celia has a pinterest board on this kind of stuff. I did a few lines on what I loved and a few lines on what I promise, since most people seem to get wrapped up in explaining their entire story.

I finished mine 3 hours before walking down the aisle. I suck lol

Also, I second Janeen on how people tend to turn their vows into a story, and end up not actually vowing anything to each other. I hate that!

Writing our own vows was big for my FH also. I have a few lines of "you make me sane when i'm going crazy" and other things like that, and then a few promises, real stuff but also "I promise to always sit next to you" etc.

We also wrote our own vows and i seriously freaked out about it. lol. DH is usually so good at writing and i struggle. i refused to procrastinate though, and one day i literally sat at my computer and i was like, 'i'm not done or leaving until have these written.' and i did it. it wasn't that hard once i sat down and really thought about them.

i did edit them a little throughout the last couple months as i thought of other things.

i googled and pinterested wedding vows. i thought i was gonna have to cut and paste other's words into my own... but honestly, they ended up just being great inspiration for my own and i actually pretty much wrote my own.

my advice to you, is to just sit down and really think about how you feel about your FH. are there certain things that you like in particular? how does he make you a better person? have your friends ever asked you about him? ... what do you say?

i started out with how he was the man of my dreams and i thought he'd only existed in my dreams. how lucky i was to be standing there with him that day. what i love about him and how he makes me a better person. i promised him that i'd never take for granted the special love that we have. how excited i was about the future, even though every thing about us has been so easy since the first day we met, no matter what the future brought, even thought it may not be so easy, i would always be there to encourage and support his dreams. and i loved him.

ETA: it's ok to have some funny things in there, especially if that's how you are as a couple. DH rick rolled me at the end of his. lol.

    Thank you!

Four lines about what you love about him. Four lines about what you'll do to make your marriage work. Don't make it literature; make it talking to your partner. Keep it short; make it funny.

Thank you ladies for all of the advice! Janeen and KM, I agree. The stories get a little ridiculous. Celia, I knew I should have just gone straight to you, your Pinterest board is fantastic!

Thank you all for your kind words. I think that board really rocks because so many other officiants contribute to it and there are a variety of viewpoints.

One thing to add; if you're nervous about this, you don't HAVE to use a mic so the entire group an hear you; these are vows to each other. Many of my couples have chosen to go off mic for this and then have a pretty copy of their vows printed up to put by the cake or the guest book. One of my couples actually whispered their vows to each other; it was so, so moving: I get chills thinking about them, and the photos of them leaning in to do that were just amazing.

I haven't written mine yet but have started jotting ideas down. Planning on incorporating some funnies in there because I know FHs will be funny...he's not a super serious guy! I am going to attempt to make him cry though hahah bc I'll be sobbing like a 3 year old.
