Writing our Vows

Jill, on May 10, 2019 at 6:28 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 7
My FH is extremely introverted, but much to my surprise, he wants us to write our own vows. Any one who wrote your own vows, how long did that take? I’m just worried that with all the planning and busy schedules that I’m going to keep putting it off. So I’m just trying to get an idea on how much time it took, including revisions. I’m sure it’s a process and gets changed. I have an idea on what I want to say but it makes me nervous saying it in front of everyone else. Plus, I’m kind of worried that I’m going to pour my heat out and he won’t say as much since he is introverted, which I know is silly and just my nerves. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

We wrote our own vows. I had a lot of what I wanted to say playing around in my head, so when I sat down to actually write them it didn't take that long. I would say an hour, maybe two tops and that counts revisions. I don't know how long it took my H, but I think it was similar. We both write creatively as a hobby, so ours may have taken less than the average person who doesn't write that often. My H is super sentimental, so I wasn't worried about what he wrote. If you are nervous, a trick I've heard is both give your vows to a mutual friend or family member who you trust won't share anything about them and have them read it. Then the friend can give feedback on how they align. Feedback like one of you wrote a lot more than the other, or one of you went with funny while the other did more sentimental and then you can adjust accordingly. Saying our own vows was my favorite part of the wedding. I loved that we said something from the heart as opposed to a standard script. It's one of the reasons we opted to hire a videographer and it's my favorite part of the wedding video.

Thank you for the info - this helps. I love the idea of having someone else giving you feedback.

About an hour or two. My FH have agreed to have our officiant read them over a week or so before to let us know if they’re on the same level genre wise. Aka if there’s humor and sarcasm in one it would be odd to have the spouse reading a heartfelt one.

Keep it it to five minutes read aloud if that helps

I write poetry so it literally took me like 20 minutes. With revisions maybe an hour and a half. I honestly dont think my FH even started because he asked me the other day how long mines was so he could have a reference lol. I wouldn't overthink it. Just write down what's on your mind.

I had no idea where to even begin. I googled it how to write our own vows and started just writing with the tips and advice that I read about. It only took me like an hour. I've gone back through and changed a few things a couple times. I know my FH hasn't even started his and our wedding is less than a month away lol.

I found that the inspiration to write them would have hit me randomly at random times. I found a few online resources that were very helpful.
