Writing our own ceremony....halp! Advice!

aharden, on May 10, 2016 at 1:12 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 2

I am in the process of figuring out exactly how our ceremony is going to pan out.

So far I have:

The Procession

Officiant Opening Remarks

"These Hands" Reading

Transition to Vows

Declaration of Intent

Exchange of Vows

Ring Exchange

Ring Phrases

Pronouncement of Marriage

The Kiss

Unity Tree & Poem

Closing Remarks

The Recessional

I can't attach the whole thing in this post as a word document for whatever reason, but maybe if I can message it to someone for advice? I start to get confused with the "Transition to Vows and Declaration of Intent". Are these necessary? If anyone has experience writing ceremonies please help me! Our officiant is the town clerk so it's not like he is a professional.

Thank you!!

It's my understanding that Declaration of Intent is actually required by law in some states, and is often considered the only necessary piece of the ceremony to determine the marriage is legal so I would include that without a doubt.

Everything else is gravy really. Good places to find ceremony structures are sites that offer ordination. Even if you don't go with their specific wording, they can give you a sense of the different ways you can set up the ceremony structure. Good luck!

This is how I would order the ceremony:

    The Procession

    Officiant's Opening Remarks/Welcoming Guests

Question/Declaration of Intent ("I do or I will")

    "These Hands" Reading

Exchange of Vows (traditional or your own)

Ring Exchange while repeating Ring Phrases

    Unity Tree & Poem

    Pronouncement of Marriage

    The Kiss

    The Recessional
