Would you/Have you mismatched metals in your bridal set??

mlw, on August 20, 2011 at 8:21 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14

I have a 14kt white gold engagement ring. I did find that band I have posted on here at the Zales Outlet, but it's Platinum, which I really didn't want. My grandfather was jewler and he told me a long time ago that over time platinum would lose it's shine and luster. So has anyone mixed and matched? How did it work out for you??

I personally love platinum -- but may be concerned how the two rings would wear over time... being different metals. platinum does not need the rhodium plating that white gold has, so that would also be a factor long term. i would rather have the platinum, but understand your concern seeing as you already have your engagement ring in another metal. is there a reputable jeweler in your area that could design your ring for you? that would be worth looking into as an option - so you could have the metal and the look that you want. good luck!

No, I have another option that I *love*. But to have a custom ring done I was quoted "starting at $1600"!!! Our two rings together are $1609 with tax and the extra protection plan.

I wouldn't mix platinum and white gold, and I absolutely agree with Ashlee. I don't know where you are, and what kind of a quote you requested, but I would go to an independent store. We got a much better price on a platinum ring in an independent store than what we were quoted for white gold in major chains.

    I hope it helps!

That quote WAS for white gold :\ That platinum ring was originally $****, on sale for $900-something. It's a simple band with 3 baguettes and 2 rounds.

We were told that you shouldn't mix the two metals together.

Galvanic corrosion, dissimilar metals will rust.

White/Yellow gold doesn't loose it's shine, platinum can be rediped in rhodium to regain it's shine. I have been wearing my engagement ring for 2 years and have had it dipped once.

I don't think you should mix the metals.

We didn't mix and match due to my allergies... I'm allergic to a lot of metals, and we had to get a palladium e-ring and band for me... We got his band from the same material because basically I'm weird and I didn't want to be allergic to his wedding band. Even though I'm not the one wearing his, the idea bugged me. lol! All 3 rings are palladium.

Lol @RobinRockr! I also am allergic to metals, base metals to be exact. I even have to cover the backs of the buttons on my jeans so I don't get a rash! FH does not have this problem (and neither do my sisters, lucky bishes lol) so his ring can be whatever metal he wants, but, like you, I want our rings to match! I really don't think it's good to mix metals anyway.

My rings are platinum and antique and look great. I've never had them re-dipped or even polished in 24 years.

Could you have your engagement diamond reset into platinum?

My e-ring was custom made and is platinum (my FH's choice), like Nancy I have not had my e-ring dipped and never will. Platinum should not be choosen if you want a your ring to be the same in 30 years as it is today, the beauty of platinum is that it will change slightly over time but will never lose any actual metal. That being said I was not originally a platinum fan so my wedding band is white cold and diamonds (I have learned to love my e-ring). My FH is not happy about my choice and plans to have my wedding band re-created in platinum as soon as the budget will allow.

Actually, as Ashlee said it's white gold that needs redipping (or rhodium plating), not platinum. Platinum is usually only polished once in a while, but not redipped.

My e ring is white gold, and FH says that my band will be tungsten like his. I picked out this cute enhancer, but i have a feeling that he will go with the tungsten. I held his ring up next to my e ring it doesnt look bad, but i like diamonds lol. as long as its from him i happy

Platinum is a much harder metal than 14K gold. It may wear down the engagement ring over time. This is why one usually does not mix metals of different hardness or strengths.

Our jeweler told us that mixing metals really isn't a big deal. It can wear some over time, but not enough that it would be an issue - again from our jeweler. I'd say get what you like.
