Worship in the ceremony

Joy, on April 22, 2012 at 4:54 PM Posted in Planning 0 6

FH and I are having a very "old school" ceremony where there will be congregational worship before and during the ceremony (the kind of wedding my grandparents and their parents had on Sunday mornings, which I just love that tradition).

My father is a worship pastor, so you would think I wouldn't have to ask on this board, but I'm getting so stuck on picking and narrowing down songs to have in the ceremony.

We have a family bible that we will be signing during the ceremony (you know, family tree, family history, and the marriage "license" in the big bible that sits on the family's coffee table. Yeah. That's what we're doing. Smiley smile ) After that we will sing "Ancient Words".

I'm just stuck on the song for after the parents are brought in (My dad will walk my mom to her seat and then get on stage to lead worship, then run back and grab me to take me to my groom).

Any suggestions on a "call to worship" for my religious ceremony?

(Southern Baptist, but not specifically traditional church).

Joy, I am have a worship ceremony as well. Do you have any praise songs that you like to praise to?

FH loves "Amazing Grace" so we are starting out with that song and then move on to more modern songs. We both love Byron Cage, Donald McCurklin and Martha Munizzi so they will definitely be sung that day as well.

Blessed Be Your Name is both of our favorites, and we think it is fitting for a wedding.. "Every blessing You pour out, I turn to praise You" and even "When the darkness closes in Lord, still I will say, Blessed be the name of the Lord!" Kind of saying, "We know this isn't going to all be pretty, but we will praise you through all of it."

Amazing Grace is always a favorite. Smiley smile

I've just got my good old trusty Baptist Hymnal on my desk and I'm reading every one through and through.

We want to throw in some good old songs, because honestly most of the crowd at our wedding is going to be in the 60+ crowd. Think we will throw in some David Crowder Band and Gungor towards the end though.

I agree with relying on the Hymnal. FH will go through the hymnal with our mothers for their requests as well.

Our ceremony is going to be about 45 minutes with the praise portion in the beginning which will be 20 - 30 minutes. How long will your ceremony/praise & worship period be.

Since my dad is leading the worship, not quite as long, maybe about 10-15 minutes of worship before the ceremony, then another 20 minutes after we come in with a few worship songs during us being there.

This isn't a very typical thing to do anymore, which makes me sad. I couldn't imagine my wedding without some praisin'! Smiley smile

Neither could I. I have been to so many weddings when Jesus is barely mentioned. I have spoken with several people and told them that I was going to do this. Each of those people complained about how long the ceremony was going to be. I just advised them to sit in the balcony in the back. Most of the people who are coming to our ceremony, do not attend church regularly, so this may be the only time where they will here praise & worship. I spoke with FH and asked if it's okay to have an alter call. He is in agreement. At the next meeting with the pastor to see if we can do this.

I don't want our ceremony to only be about our love, but also about our love for Christ and our desire to evangelize

    I LOVE this!

My wedding was on a Sunday morning in front of the whole entire congregation. DH's uncle is our pastor and he actually made our wedding into an illustrated sermon.

No one in the church knew we were getting married. Smiley laugh

It was a surprise and it started with praise and worship, then he did our ceremony with preaching kinda intertwined with it. He mostly talked about how each part of the ceremony was directly an example of Jesus' love.

I don't remember the praise and worship songs that were done, because we weren't out at that moment, but I just wanted to say that I think that's an awesome idea!
