Worried about the hora...

Malari, on October 23, 2017 at 12:10 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 1 14

Hi all. I'm in the early stages of planning my wedding. My fiancé is Jewish and REALLY looking forward to being lifted in the chair during the hora. I'm not... I am a plus size bride and really self conscious about my weight. I'm terrified about the hora. I'm worried they won't be able to lift me, or they'll drop me... Basically I don't want to do it, but its really important to my fiancé... what should I do??

Is your fiance aware that you're self conscious?

Is it an option for only him and not for you? Or does it have to be both of you together?

BTW though, I wouldn't be too worried about your weight. If one guy takes each leg of the chair, they will be able to lift you, no problem. They won't be able to tell how much you weigh because it will be distributed between so many people. However, I can see it being awkward and scary anyways, so I don't blame you for wanting to skip it Smiley smile

Dont be worried! As long as you have a handful of strong guys (or gals!) you should both be all set. FH and I are both Jewish. He told one of his friends that she can't break up with her bf until after our reception (they are very happy, he was just joking!) because he's a big strong guy and wants him there. As long as enough of his family are there they'll be able to show other guests who aren't familiar with the hora how to lift you both.

If you're uncomfortable then don't do it.

I have seen every shape and size go up in the chair. It's not as bad as you think! If it's something his family and friends do, they will know what to do

Yeah. Don't worry. They know what they're doing, strong men usually are the first to lift you up. My husband is Jewish and I went up there, I was also nervous but now I tell him it has been the best ride of my life. You will be fine! As PP said the weight is distributed. If you really feel nervous about it I think you should talk to your FH.

I was just at a wedding where they lifted the FOB....a very tall and large man. It was fine, you're good girl!

I think you will be okay, I was at a wedding where the bride was plus size and they lifted her up without any issues (or at least that is how it looked). Personally, if your FH is really into it, I would just do it. I know that my FH hasnt asked for much, so whenever he mentions something that he likes I try to make sure it happens, like he really wanted a photobooth, so we made sure to fit it into our budget. If it really means that much to him, be open minded, you may actually enjoy it!

Hora is not the same thing as the chair lifting. You don't need to do both.

I watched my 275lbs uncle go up like a feather with 4 of my cousins and uncles holding up the chair, don't worry about them not being able to get it up! If you feel nervous you can practice at the rehearsal dinner or a family gathering beforehand to ease your mind!

I'd be terrified too. You CAN do a hora without a chair lift but I do think you'll be okay.

However, you should talk to him about it.

Thanks for the reassurance and advice everyone! My FH is being sweet and saying we can skip it but it is super important to him so I'm just gonna have to get over my anxiety!

How did it go? This is years later so you probably won't see this but I'm curious as a plus-sized bride getting ready to be lifted in chairs in a few weeks!
