Worried About Cruise Cancellations

Light, on February 17, 2020 at 4:36 AM Posted in Honeymoon 0 9

We getting dangerously close to our wedding and it seems cruises are getting canceled or running into issues more and more thanks to the Coronavirus. We have insurance and will get all of our money back, but I'm honestly not sure if I should start looking at other options or not?

I’d have a back up plan. Put some money away for a getaway even if it’s just for the weekend then you can do something more substantial when you get your refund. Try Groupon they have plenty of steals.

Where is your cruise originating from, and where is it sailing to? The only itineraries that are really affected at this point are Asia region.

Also regarding your insurance...if the cruise line cancels your cruise you should be reimbursed fully for your fare by the cruise line. If you opt to cancel your trip out of fear of coronavirus, read your policy carefully before you do. In general, only policies that include 'cancel for any reason' may provide benefits. Epidemic/pandemic coverage is very rare, and if you cancel on your own you may find that you will not get your money back.

We don't plan to cancel, but it seems like if it does start to affect the US we may have to make other plans. I'm usually very keen on sticking to plan, but I don't wont to have any nasty surprises.

I wouldn’t plan a backup honeymoon unless/until your planned honeymoon is actually cancelled. I understand wanting to be prepared, but I worry you’re just setting yourself up for regret in some form of comparing the honeymoon you’re on to the honeymoon you’re not on. Get your flu shot and stay happy and healthy. All might just go according to plan. 😊

Unless your cruise is out of or going to Asian, I wouldn't worry about it.

Even if it affects the US, it's unlikely to cause cancellation of domestic cruises. What would they do--require people to stay in their houses? Any time people go anywhere--particularly to large public events like sports games or concerts--you run the risk of transmitting a virus, but we don't expect the government to cancel those. The big reason Asian cruises are now getting cancelled is because coronavirus isn't generally in the US, and they're trying to keep it from coming here.

We don't cancel cruises during flu season, even though flu kills far more people than coronavirus. If coronavirus becomes more common here, it will be treated in a similar manner.

I agree with this 100%. There's a lot of fear out there about Coronavirus, but really, it's just a more drastic form of the flu, and it's currently mostly contained in one area. The cases here are SUPER minimal. As of Friday there were 15 cases in the whole U.S., of which we have a population of 327 million! The number of confirmed cases here is so insignificant it shouldn't even be a number!

Don't let this scare you. Our cruise is this week and we're not at all scared of Coronavirus. We're much more scared of Norovirus, which is way more common on cruise ships! Stick with your plan for now. Take your vitamins, keep stress low, and practice good hygiene and self-care. You'll likely be just fine. Smiley heart

That's good to hear, I've never been on a cruise before so I wasn't sure how they would react, we where so excited to pay everything off.

I wouldn't plan til you're cancelled. And I doubt you'll be cancelled unless you're in the Asia area.
We're doing a cruise in the Bahamas, but I doubt it will be a problem at all. Just gonna go with the flow.
