Work and your wedding date

Tina, on March 8, 2022 at 8:32 AM Posted in Community Conversations 5 14
Hello everyone,
I am not sure how you decided on your date, but for us there were a few things that lead to ours. One I love Winter and he enjoys it. Two it's a almost exactly a month in-between our birthdays. Lastly it's slow season for both of us at work. I work at a bakery so after the holidays January is always the slowest. My date has been set for about two years. We have talked about it at work
While it is next year I didn't think I needed to take off so early during our deadest time. Yesterday the owners gave the management teams letters stating they were going out of town in January next year and the month is now blacked out. So at the moment while they decide my time off is not allowed.
Does anyone else have any issues at work with their dates? How have you or did you handle it?

Have you already booked a venue and/or vendors? If not, I would pick another date in the winter that you like, not based on your job. You tried to plan your wedding during their slow season to help them. If they can’t accommodate your one request, I wouldn’t accommodate their needs either.

My entire wedding is done and 75% paid for. We picked this date for us. We loved that it was in January since we both enjoy winter and that it's in-between our birthdays. Something that is unique to us.
My FH and I have discussed that if they won't give me the time off then that is my notice. As of the 17th of January I will no longer work there.
    Thank you for your advice!

It depends on your commitment to the job and how long you've been there, I think. If you have no issue getting a different job then I wouldn't worry about it. However, if you tell them that Jan 17 is your notice, they could tell you not to wait and let you go now, so be prepared. They should at least take under consideration that you planned it during the off-season and it's 10 months in advance.

I wouldn't be telling them that is my notice now. I know that wouldn't end well. When I started last summer I told them about my wedding date to make sure it wouldn't be an issue. They said it wouldn't be especially since it wasn't during major holidays.

I always knew I wanted a "fall" wedding, but my FH didn't want October, so we decided mid September. Now I've been interviewing at a school office, and August/September are their busiest months, so I would be in a similar position. But I brought it up and they said it shouldn't be an issue.

Are there not enough people to cover both you and the owners being out at that time? Did they know when your wedding was already but you just didn't put the time in yet?

If they won't let you off you should quit. You don't owe your life to a job. I actually was just in this situation with my job. I turned in my request off even before request offs are due. They are due a month in advance and I turned it in 3 months ago. I was just told the other week it wasn't approved because my boss is taking off that month to do something. So the next day I let them know I was quitting and it was the best thing I did. Not only do I get off for my wedding. It takes a whole lot of stress off me and I can focus on my big day now

That's an awful situation, but I am glad that it turned out well for you. I don't want to leave right away because I don't want my FH to have to pay for everything. But this situation is leaving a bad taste in my mouth.
    Thank you for your advice!

My wedding is only a month away and that is the only reason besides knowing we'd be fine money wise that I quit this far before it. I believe if you can stick it out until then do it. But make sure you keep you and your future in the front of your head so you can do what is best for you! Good luck with whatever you decide!!

I honestly didn't think it would be an issue. People in my department have been off for a while before and we managed without causing an issue to anyone.
We have been discussing this for a while I hadn't put in an official request off until yesterday. When I did the owners family told my boss it wasn't allowed due to the blackout dates presented to all the department heads yesterday.

I think this is the right response. If they won't give you time off for your wedding, will they give you time off for other important milestones down the road? I've always found companies, even if they're small and local, that offer vacation time but then restrict when you can use it aren't necessarily the companies you want to continue working for.

I have my time off approved for our wedding and am not attached to my job so if a problem pops up I will be leaving said job. However my sister did have a problem. They took 2 years to plan their wedding and had time off requested and everything then the Tuesday BEFORE their wedding (we are talking 4 days before) he husbands job informed him that he did not have the vacation time and would be required to work the day before and the wedding day. Turns out they had been counting the days he was at mandatory training for being in the army against his vacation time which is a huge no no, as in illegal......if your in any branch of the military they cannot count time off for training against your attendance or vacation time. So he took both days off and quickly found a new place of employment.

WOW that sucks! My company has black out dates during the holidays like Christmas day but if someone wants to work our shift, we can give it to them no problem as long as its not OT for that person. But since my date is right after Christmas and I have vacation time they can't do much about not allowing my time.

I agree. I had assumed Christmas and other major holidays would be an issue. However, since it's not a holiday nothing major happening for three weeks from my date and I never request time off I figured it was a none issue.

After talking it over with my FH they seem to choose who can get time off certain times and who can't. We are supposed to be blacked out all of December and someone in my department got the day off. Others were not happy they could not have the same courtesy extended. So this seems like it has been a reoccurring issue with them.
