Wording for formal reception?!

Danielle, on June 23, 2010 at 3:19 PM Posted in Planning 0 2

We'd like to have a more formal dress code for our ceremony/reception. I don't want everyone in suits & ties, but I don't want our guests to arrive in jeans w/holes in them either. How do I word my invites? Can I say "Formal Reception to follow"? Does that describe what I'm thinking? Ugh.

I think that is a good way to write it out. I think if anyone hears formal they know what to wear or at least I would hope so. LOL!!

Hopefully no one would show up at a wedding in torn jeans unless it was a "costume" wedding! But I do get what you are saying. Most guests take their clues from the invitation itself: formal invite/informal invite, venue location (cathedral vs beach), time of ceremony (evening usually being much more formal than morning or afternoon). If you designate "formal" on your invitation, but the "clues" point to something less than that, you might confuse your guests. Also, to me, formal rates up their with tuxes/suits for men and gowns for women.

I think what you might be aiming for is what's called "semi-formal." It's more broad, yes, but is usually defined as possible suit or sport coat for men, or nice slacks, shirt, tie. For the ladies, a cocktail dress or gown or dress pantsuit.
