Wording for ceremony

Alyssa, on April 7, 2023 at 3:00 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 7
Our officiant is my aunt and she wants to ask the question “who gives the bride away” or whatever the wording is. I like the idea of acknowledging that I’m transitioning from someone’s daughter to someone’s wife but I hate the wording. I’m pridefully very independent and hate that it implies I belong to my parents and then I belong to my husband. It also gives me mad “I’ll trade you a cow for my daughter” vibes and I’m not here for it.

Curious if anyone did something different? Or if I should just leave it out all together

You could word it as something like, "Who presents this woman..." or "Who accompanies this bride...", or "Who stands with this couple...", etc.

Outside of the movies, we have never heard any variation of that line spoken. So you can leave it out and no one will miss it. Be firm about what you want and don’t want included.

I like Lisa’s suggestion of “Who stands with this couple?” Sounds much better and like it’s a question of who has supported the two of you throughout your lives 😊

Since I am an older bride whose parent have long since passed, my son is escorting me down the aisle. Our officiant will ask ""Who is presenting this beautiful Bride to the Groom?" and he is responding. "My brother and I do". I love it!

I get the feeling. I walked myself and my husband met me halfway down the aisle and I didn’t have anything phrasing like that in our ceremony because I don’t like the feeling of being passed property lol. I know many don’t feel that way but that’s just how I felt. I like Lisa’s suggestion of “who stands with this couple” if you’re going to include that part

We didn't have that wording. My husband and I just hugged my father and my son after they walked me down the aisle.
