Hi! Have any of you stained your own wood for DIY signs? Was it easy? Do you have any tips?! Thanks!!

Haha! I didn't either until I saw "instructions" at Lowe's! Good to know I don't need to spend the extra money on that. Smiley smile Did you do a finishing coat or just the actual wood stain? Thanks!

We just stained the wood before the wedding. Now that it's signed, we plan to put a clear coat over it before hanging it, it's just a matter of getting around to it.

I always sand the wood smooth. Wipe the wood down with a rag. Then take shop towels to rub the stain with the grain. Let it sit for recommended time on label, then rub off. Let dry. My mom likes her wood dark, so she’ll put multiple coats. I also normally put one coat of sealer just so the stain doesn’t make a mess later. Not my favorite sign, but it’s the only one I have a picture of lol. (I’m doing hidden Mickeys at my wedding) This is half inch plywood with one coat of stain, and 3 coats of black paint with vinyl coated with semigloss Polyurethane. Wood Staining 1

Wood Staining 3I took basic plywood, had Home Depot cut to the size I wanted, stained and put vinyl on it. I rubbed the stain on with an old cloth, let it sit, then 7-8 min later I rubbed it off. That’s what the can of stain recommended. I only did one coat because I didn’t want it super dark. I did about 6 other signs as well, but I didn’t take pictures. Super easy. The only thing I would say is I could have bought the smaller can of stain. The hardest part was putting the vinyl on straight. Mine aren’t perfect but I also could have been more careful too. I’m just not that detailed oriented. I think they turned out super cute.
