Wood slice cake stand

Jennifer, on June 5, 2021 at 9:21 PM Posted in Do It Yourself 1 10
Does anyone who made a raw piece of wood food safe for a cake stand have any tips?
We just picked up a raw 5 inch thick slice from a local lumber yard to hopefully use for our cake stand. But since it’s raw wood it has little bugs on it. Has anyone run into this before? How did you successfully remove the bugs and then seal the wood to make it food safe?

This is the idea we’re going forWood slice cake stand 1

Hey! For my bff’s wedding FH and I just cut wood from our wood pile, we actually didn’t have any bugs, but something that kill bugs naturally is temperature, so throw it in the freezer for a few days/week or throw it in a kiln at 135, or if you have heat lamps you can use those too.

Also- we didn’t seal the wood since bakers always use a cake board that is not visible, we did not have to worry about it. Here is the wood slab FH cut and the cake I made to go with it. Wood slice cake stand 2

Eek! Maybe the lumberyard knows of a safe solution… or Google or perhaps a new piece of wood from somewhere else. As for the above suggestion, I honestly wouldn’t want a piece of bug infested wood in my freezer (or in my house at all).

Assuming your wedding isn't in just a few days, you could spray it with an insecticide and let it air out. Peppermint oil is a natural insect deterrent, as well. I actually spray all the windows, doors, and baseboards in my house with peppermint oil diluted in water because we have cats and can't use any insecticides indoors (and im not a crazy snake oil person, but the peppermint oil really does work lol).

I condition my wood cutting board with food grade mineral oil. They have bottles at menards.

It’s 18 inches across, I don’t have a be enough freezer anyways lol. I started looking up solutions and sounds like borax and water works too. But I forgot about the peppermint I might try that.
Oh good to know! I’ll have to look for some to condition it.

I’m hoping it’s because it was sitting outside when we picked it up and the bugs are only on the outside, not that they go all the way through. And freezing won’t work well anyways, it’s 18 inches across and I don’t have a freezer big enough lol

Hmm well it’s been in the trunk since we picked it up and it was 94 yesterday and 96 today... we might be cooking everything right out of it without trying 😂

Just leave it outside for a few days, maybe in the sun and let it dry out. I'd recommend sanding it as well. We did that and it was fine!

I had that for my wedding and it was fine and no bugs appeared. I say just keep it clean and stored somewhere where it won’t get ruined Smiley smile
