Won a free engagement shoot but have to pay for the photos

John Smith, on December 10, 2019 at 12:32 PM Posted in Planning 0 5

We won a free engagement shoot and were really excited. The lady was fun to work with and promised us a sneak peak. We got the sneak peak and I don't think it's a good photo at all. On top of that, her email stated that we have to purchase any other photos we want. The bright side is that we get one free print, but unless she gives us the digital version too we won't be able to use it for a save the date.

We should have seen this coming but we didn't Smiley sad

At least it was free, but now we have to schedule an actual engagement shoot, and we are 7 months from the wedding and need to sent the save the dates ASAP.

Oh no, that’s awful! Is there any fine print in the original contest that you entered that says you’d have to pay for the images? I would understand paying for the prints, but if she won’t send over just the digital images that seems scam-y.

Also, where are you based out of? (If you need help finding a photographer)

I hate it when photographer charges extra for the photos, the digital files or the right to print. It would be like when buy something from a store and they say you need to pay extra in order to be able to use it 😅 just ridiculous, even if it’s a free shoot (unless it was agreed upon beforehand). Good luck to your new engagement shoot, you should be able to do that and have the save the dates done within a month. That’s how long it took me.

Will you be able to scan in the print & use it for save the dates? That's usually how the "free" things work at bridal shows, nothing is ever free and you end up having to pay quite a bit.

I'm sorry you were disappointed but I agree that this seems to be pretty standard for these types of "contests." Your post is a good tip for anyone heading to a bridal show in the future. Beware what contests you enter and what prizes you accept. Smiley smile

Ask if you can purchase digital rights to just one photo (one photo that YOU pick) that you can use for your save the dates.
