Witness/ my brother?

Rebeca, on March 28, 2014 at 9:23 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 13

Hi girls!

Question here: does the witness of the bride have to be female?

I am not having a MOH but three bridesmaids. I'm really uncomfortable that I'm not honoring m brother in any way, so I thought I could have him be my witness to sign the papers? Is that acceptable?

I'd appreciate your insight!

Thanks!

I had no witnesses. i can't imagine that there is a specific law in your province about the witness (if needed at all) having to be a female

    1. No, the witness only has to be human and of legal age.

As long is your witness that is signing is 18 you're good. My bestfriend got married and only had her sister and FSIL as her bridesmaids because it was a very small wedding. Neither were of age, and she wanted me to be the witness and sign the marriage license. It was a great honor and I'm sure your brother will feel the same way =)

That sounds fine. My brother is going to be a groomsman - did you think of doing something like that too?

@ AugustBride - I asked my fiance if he would be okay with brother being one of his groomsman, but he has many brothers himself, so it won't work... don't know what else I could do to honour my brother... I thought of putting my mom, dad and brother and his wife at the head table, but my fiance isn't okay with that... so I thought of having my brother as a witness so he feels special.

If you are having any readings during the ceremony you could also have your brother do one of those. Not sure what type of ceremony you're doing, but he could read a bible verse or a poem maybe.

Doesn't matter. They have to be breathing and over 18 in most places.

You can have your brother walk your mom down the aisle? That's what I'm doing. Granted we don't have the best relationship so I didn't want him intimately involved in the wedding, but also wanted him to feel like a part of the family.

I'm having my cousin/brother be my witness.

As I want him to be part of it when my brother is walking me down the aisle and my MOH isn't bothered
