Winter Wedding... Good or Bad Idea?

Kara, on June 12, 2017 at 6:01 AM Posted in Planning 0 18

We have been presented with an opportunity by a venue we are interested in... For the months of January and February they will WAIVE all rental and venue fees. This is huge! Since we will be having our ceremony and reception at the same venue this will save us 4k .

However, we were ideally wanting a September wedding (I hate hot, fiancè hates cold)

** So my question is has anyone attended or held your wedding during the deep winter months? Do you regret it? Were guests miserable? Was it beautiful and you wouldn't trade it for anything? We live in Georgia, so winter is very hard to read. It could be 60° or 30°.

I do love the idea of offering a blanket to everyone and having fit pits etc...

Any help or tips would be amazing!

***Edit- Indoor ceremony and Reception. Guests will have an outdoor patio space available to them if they wish to go outside.

I had a January wedding and though the weather decided to have winter that weekend (NE FL's only cold weekend), it was lovely. However, it sounds like you might be planning an outdoor wedding, and that would not have been fun at all. I was a wedding musician for many years, and I can't count the number of times we were outside playing the pre-ceremony music while all the guests stayed inside until the coordinator told them they had to go out so the wedding could happen. If it's 65 and sunny, sure, have it outside. But be sure there's an indoor location you like for if it's cold, because your guests will not be happy if they have to freeze, even if they have a little blanket.

We live in Ohio and the same can be said about the weather but my FH and I wanted a winter wedding because we've seen it done before and it was beautiful! And it is significantly cheaper to do a winter wedding for us. We've seen them done and they're beautiful and as long as it wasn't outside, the guests weren't miserable

Agree with PPs. Winter weddings are fine, but not outdoors if the weather is a factor at all. I'd say Georgia is too hit and miss for outdoors.

I don't know if I would attend an outdoor wedding in the winter months, even if fire pits or blankets were offered.

I don't tolerate cold well. I walk my dogs with ski pants on at like 45F.

I think if you're going to pick Jan or Feb you should have everything indoors.

I just had one! (I'm from Oz) No complaints. Got a special deal on the venue, celebrant and photographer. Everything was indoors. Had the fireplace going at the reception and it was just lovely and cozy. I love winter!

Find some sort of shawl for when you're taking photos though. I was bloody freezing!

Is it an indoor venue, or an outdoor venue?

If it is an indoor venue, does it have proper heating?

If it is an outdoor venue, does it have a bad weather back-up plan? Not just for rain, but for the cold, unexpected wind, etc.

I went to a January wedding in FL, but obviously winter is not really an issue there. I would not plan on doing an outdoor ceremony if you have your wedding in these months. Formal clothing is generally not very warm.

If you plan to have an indoor wedding? It can be great and very beautiful! But an outdoor wedding? No thank you.

We had a winter wedding, right at the beginning of January. Even with rain, it was an incredible day, we took outdoor photos, and it was gorgeous. Plus everyone got to stay warm! There was a fireplace inside our reception venue and it was great.

Here are some photos of our indoor reception! (For the record, our ceremony was indoors too!)

And here are some of the outdoor photos we took, despite the rain!

Would your wedding be outdoors? If yes, I wouldn't do it.

I'm in NY though and sometimes September (your current wedding month) month is so hot here so I'd imagine it's warmer in GA in September, which imo is just as miserable as being cold.

Are you having any part of the wedding outside? If so it could be uncomfortable for your guests. If everything was inside I would have a great time. I love the winter so I have no problem going out in it.

Anytime of year for the wedding works as long as it's all indoors.

One word. Snowtober; we had two feet of snow in NY/NY several years ago.....on Halloween....

We do almost as many weddings in the winter as we do in the summer, but please do not subject your guests to being outside. If YOU want to take photos out there, go right ahead, but don't plan on the ceremony, cocktail hour or any significant parts of the day to be outside for them.

I think if you can do a winter wedding that keeps guests comfort in mind then it would be okay. I personally HATE being cold. Hate it. If it's outside make sure you keep the possibility of cold in mind. Whether you have warm blankets, space heaters, etc. whatever it takes

Please make sure it is inside. I get extremely cold easily and once I start shivering I can't stop. I live in Buffalo, so it is 50/50 shot of snow or sun even in the winter. I wanted nothing to do with a winter wedding

Do you have a lot of people who will be coming from out of town? Keep in mind that winter = travel delays, and you could miss having VIPs if they get stuck somewhere.

We had a winter wedding and it was a destination wedding so guests had to travel. Here's what it looked like on the my wedding day. It was spectacular. Everything was held at the resort so guests never had to leave the warmth of the hotel unless they wanted to. There was a heated outdoor pool in the middle of the snowy mountains that some took advantage of. There was also a fire pit out on the porch that some enjoyed. There were gondola rides to the top of the mountain, skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and snow tubing. The sleigh rides weren't operating that weekend, but any other weekend they probably would. I don't have any regrets.

ETA: Just read you're considering an outdoor wedding. NO!!! Do your photos outside, but please don't subject your guests to cold temps. Anything less than 65 degrees should be inside.
