Winter Engagement Photo Outfits?

Sav, on December 12, 2020 at 11:40 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11
I’ve looked online a TON recently trying to get ideas on what to wear for my winter engagement pictures. Most of what I’ve seen just doesn’t feel “Me”, what advice was given to you as far as outfit choices? What colors photograph best?

Are you doing outdoor photos in the snow? If so, a bright red always seems to stand out nicely against the snow! Otherwise, maybe cute boots and a sweater? I had asked a similar question about winter engagement photos a few months ago - a couple people responded with some photo ideas. Check out that thread here: https://www.weddingwire.com/wedding-forums/winter-engagement-photos-ideas/e4fea4e3001fb3c8.html

My photographer told us to stay away from super busy patterns, clashing colors, and anything too matchy-matchy (like both of us in plaid flannel shirts).

I think that plain, solid neutrals look the best, with minimal patterns. But plenty of people pull off bolder colors (like red), particularly in the winter. You can easily incorporate color/patterns with a scarf if you're wearing a solid coat or sweater.

What is your normal style? How many outfits is your photographer allowing? Are you doing them all outside?

You'll definitely want your outfits to feel like you! Don't feel pressured to buy new clothes, either.

We did 2 outfits for our fall shoot -- a more casual, and a more formal. For the casual, I wore one of my favorite grey shirts, jeans, and boots; it's an outfit I wear all the time. My DH wore a green flannel and jeans. For the more formal, I wore a solid navy dress and heels, whereas DH wore a sweater over a button-up and kept the jeans.

If the example pics don’t feel like “you”, maybe just wear an outfit that YOU would typically wear in the winter. No need to complicate a simple task. As for colors, your photographer knows their style, their camera, the photoshoot’s background and what has turned out well. So they’d be the best person to ask.

Wear whatever fits you. You don't have to follow any rules that other list since those work for them but not everyone. There's no need to buy fancy dresses if that isn't your style. Wear what you normally do in winter that is already in your closet.

It would depend on how you feel and what you’re wanting your engagement photo vision to be. For me, I’m normally in pajamas lol and doing the bare minimum. Despite that usually being my style, I DO like to glam up every once in awhile and show off what I got lol! I did a fall photo shoot recently and I knew it was going to be kinda cold so I went with a berry/wine colored velvet dress. It photographed beautifully. Velvet dresses aren’t for everyone, but if you like them, then I think they are gorgeous for the colder fall and winter shoots since the material will you keep you warmer. But yes, like the others said, just go with what you’re comfy with it and what you want your look to be like. Definitely stay away from busy patterns. Dress in colors that compliment each other, do not match.

We just did our winter engagement photos and we dressed how we usually dress, just a step up because we didn’t want a fancy over the top photo shoot (it’s just not us...we are very casual people). I wore a white sweater and these grayish brown boots I borrowed from my mom and FH wore a green and black plaid shirt. I wanted to wear maroon but the sweater I ordered still isn’t here so I had a backup! Reds and blues look great with the winter colors because the brighter colors really pop!

I recommend doing at least two outdits and sticking with dark colors.

Our winter engagement/proposal photoshoot was on New Year’s Eve, but they’re in New Orleans-so no snow. The red really stood out!
I would recommend no other bold colors and match each other in accents rather than wearing the exact same thing.

There’s nothing wrong with the classic jeans and a solid colored top like my fiancé is wearing. If you’re taking pictures outside you could have sweaters or jackets as long as the colors and patterns aren’t too busy or flashy.

It depends a lot on your style!! Our photographer gave us a list of tips and tricks on what outfits photograph best. She suggested that both of us not wear white/cream and that we stay away from really busy patterns! We took our pictures in November of this year, and I'll attach one with our outfits. We're from GA, so it's fairly warm right now for the fall/winter.

Wear what you are comfortable in, if not it will show. I have always been told not to match my fiancé, like not twinning outfits. But choose colors that complement each other. NO stripes unless they are really small. Just from looking at your profile picture as a friend I would say to try on an orange sweater with black jeans or legging and brown/tan boots. And your fiancé a dark Forrest green or dark navy blue long sleeve or sweater with jeans and brown boots. With either of you wearing a black scarf.
