Wine Opinion?

Brittany, on January 6, 2020 at 6:26 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 21
Hi, all! So, my venue is letting us be responsible for the wine and beer. My dad, who brews beer as a hobby, is brewing a couple and bottling them. I do know that I want a bottle of bubbles (wine or champagne) on each table for the toast. However, since there will already be enough waste, I was honestly thinking of getting a few different boxes of BotaBox wines, a lush red, a crisp white, and probably either a Moscato or their dry rosé. BotaBox has really good wines. They're around $20/box and each box holds 3L, or 4 standard bottles of wine.
My question is this: would having boxed wine be considered trashy?

I think it depends on the formality of your wedding. Ours was semi formal and no one batted an eye at our boxed wine, but something more formal would probably call for bottled wine.

Will you have bar tenders? I guess there is a chance your guests won’t notice? I’ll be honest, I’ve been to a wedding where the wine came from a box and it was one of the things people talked about the most...

It's a nighttime wedding. I'm not too sure of the formality of it. I just think it would be an inexpensive and eco-friendly way to have enough wine.

We're having a buffet, so I think we may have a server or two just to make sure things are filled and stuff. I'll see what they say, I guess?

I'd make sure you have bartenders.

You know your family and friends the best so if you think they would be okay with it then go for it. Ultimately it's your money and it's up to you so do what you feel is right.

My mom is making wine for our wedding! One kit makes 30 bottles, so she is making two kinds for a total of 60 bottles. It's super easy and cost effective. Plus if you have any bottles left over you can just save them to drink another time.

Thank you for that. My family and friends would totally get where I'm coming from. His extended family may find something to nitpick with over that. I shouldn't care, but I do.

There's no particular reason not to do boxed wine if you enjoy it. I will add to the call for bartenders. The two weddings we've been to without bartenders people were TRASHED. At least the one, and maybe both ran out of alcohol because people were pouring their own and pouring heavily. Bartenders will help to mitigate that.

I'd suggest spending money to make sure you have bartenders and using boxed wine. Wine is wine is wine, IMO! But, having bartenders will limit the number of too-trashed people you have, while also just giving a little bit of a nicer feeling to it.

Their wines aren't bad. I was skeptical, but then I tried a sample and was sold. LOL! Definitely doing the bartender.

I wouldn't use boxed wines. If you buy in bulk, you can get bottled cheap enough. And I would choose a red, and a white to serve.

Yes!! A lot of heath food stores carry the kits and I believe you can also order them online!

While that's something that I would like to try, I fear I won't have time to make it. And with my luck, I'd mess it up! 😬 Totally trying it next Christmas.

OMG... you gave me an idea! Groupon has variety cases that are pretty affordable. I really want to keep the cost down.

I love things like that - when you doubt it, but it turns out great! Good luck!

We are also considering boxed wine, particularly for a red option (or two!) We have a local wine store that carries great and unusual boxes of wine that you might not find in a big box liquor store. I'm not sold on getting boxed white wine because 1. I've yet to find a boxed white that I love and 2. I've never been able to keep boxed white wine cold without the box getting soggy. I 100% agree with having bartenders. BotaBox is quite tasty and I think guests would be perfectly fine with that option! Also, depending on where you live, you may be able to buy boxed wine through someplace like Costco at a discounted member price.

If you go with a boxed wine go for one of the better brands like Black box or better and for sure have a bar tender to serve them so you don't get those people (I'm those people lol) who would pour like they do from their box at home.
