Wine in Bulk

Wendie, on February 17, 2013 at 9:15 PM Posted in Planning 0 15

We are having beer and wine at our wedding and I am wanting to buy wine in bulk. I have found an online store that sells in bulk but doesn't ship to my location. *Sigh*

If anyone knows of an online store that sells in bulk and ships to TN, PLEASE, let me know! We would greatly appreciate!! Smiley smile

Question, what do you mean "in bulk?"

Tennessee will be tough, to ship to. I am in the wine business, in Oregon, and one must jump through hoops to ship to TN.

I was hoping to get about 4 different types of wine and a champagne. Chardonnay, Moscato, Merlot, and a Pinot Noir. About 20 in the Chardonnay, 20 in the Merlot, and 10 in the rest.

My FSIL got cases for her wedding from a liquor store, but I figured an online store would be cheaper.

Have you tried bevmo during their 5cent wine sale?

Again, shipping to TN will be the issue, due to the laws. TN is strict on that. Florida is worse LOL!

I am not sure how wine sales work, in TN, as far as ordering locally. Here in Oregon, if a person orders wine by the case, they usually get the case at 10% over cost (normal mark up is 30%).

@Stephanie C.- No, I have not, but thank you! I will check it out! Smiley smile

@Kathy R.- Yeah, I considered the laws, but I still was hoping that stores could ship here. It doesn't help that I'm literally surrounded by churches. I will check local stores.

Unfortunately, overlooking the laws could cost a business their license. That is why you are having a bit of a problem with ordering online. In my state, the fine for shipping to an "illegal" state is a large dollar fine and the high chance of losing the license to sell wine anywhere.

    Not worth the risks.

Around here, Sam's Club has really good prices on wine. Usually it's a few dollars less per bottle than other shops or stores. I don't know if it's just Indiana law or if it's everywhere, but (here at least) they can't require you to be a member of Sam's Club to go in and purchase alcohol. Maybe it's the same in TN.

Alternatively some local stores may give you a discount if you buy in bulk.

Not sure what the laws are, but what about a winery? Not sure if wineries in Napa Valley ship out of state but it may be with a try. I know when you buy in bulk, they do discount.

@Personalized, the laws that I spoke of apply to anyone shipping to TN. Retailers and wineries.

@ Kathy, do you know if Kentucky is a reasonable state when it comes to this? I'm probably going to be looking into the same thing and I haven't even thought of the law thing before...

Kentucky is another tricky state, although, from what I can see, my state of Oregon (with over 600 wineries) can ship to KY.

But, you would need to check on that, as KY info states that shipping wine could be a Felony.

Not sure why Florida is so tough, I have wine shipped all the time. We belong to a few wine of the month clubs from wineries we have visited in Napa and Sonoma. Never an issue.

Also - I just found wine by the cases to be shipping to Florida as well from a certain wine we want for the wedding that I couldn't find easily. I purchased that from Totalwine.com.

@Lisa, perhaps the laws have changed in the lat year or two? Florida, Texas and New York were felony states, to ship to. The reason for the tough laws were strong wholesalers who did not want wine coming in without getting their cut of the profits.

There are states called "reciprocal states". Those we can ship to without any problems. Then, there are states where certain shipping rules apply. Then, there are those that most will not even attempt to ship to.
