Wine Box Ceremony

Candice, on May 28, 2016 at 8:57 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 11

Hi all! I'm hoping someone here has either done this or has some more insight on what would work for storage and keeping...

We plan to do a wine box ceremony with letters, etc. I'm trying to figure out what the best type of wine would be for this as it could be stored for up to 10 years. It is going to be stored on its side, but not in a temp controlled environment, just at room temp in a dark closet. We enjoy both reds and whites and champagnes...

Can anyone offer expertise or advice on this?

Sorry, but I don't know. Do you have a winery near you? If so, I would ask someone there.

Basically any dessert wine you like.... dessert wines age THE best. Also if it's going to be 10 years and you don't want to open it until then.... store it in the box upside down. Otherwise the cork will dry out and ruin the wine's taste and could also cause spillage.

We did one, but I have no advice on the wine as we're opening ours every anniversary to celebrate and add new letters. We put in a red that someone gave us from our home state.

Get a good bottle of red. Something in the $40 and up range. Cheaper wines are not meant for excessive aging. These are meant to be consumed within a few hours of purchase. Preferable from a glass, though straight from the bottle will work too. =)

A cool dark basement is the best place to store it. If you don't have a basement, consider asking someone who does for a little storage space...

Edit: Make sure you seal your letters in individual envelopes too. Mark the "do not open until XXX date"

Go speak to someone at your local wine shop (i.e. NOT total wine, tower, or some chain place). My FH and I are doing this and bought a very nice bottle of cabernet from Keenan Winery through our local shop. Typically white wines are not built for aging, you'll want a more hearty red, built for longer aging. We will store it on its side in a box (as long as it's not upright it's okay). Make sure you're looking at a bottle that the age-ability is more in a 10-12 range as opposed to 8-10. You'll want to be on the shorter side of still good, not longer.

I've seen mention of the wine box ceremony, but not totally clear on what you do. Do you just write letters to each other and seal it in a box? I only drink sweeter white wines, one person said that would work but others are saying red. Guess I'll ask around.

We are doing a wine ceremony as well, I think we are going to renew it either every year or mile markers like year 1, year 5, year 10 ect. I am going with a dessert wine. Good luck and have fun!
