Wine - Average Cost Per Bottle?

Pancakes, on March 16, 2015 at 2:35 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 18

For those that are supplying their own alcohol at their reception - How much are you spending per bottle on wine? There is a brew shop near our houses and MOH is setting up my bach. party to begin with bottling our own wine (made beforehand) and she said we should use it for the wedding wine. The price includes the bottles, decorative seals and a personalized label that I design. We went and sampled some this weekend and found the one we will make for the party. We tried two others (white and red) that we really liked and I would not mind having leftover from the wedding, should we have any. I was thinking that, if the price is comparable to what we would be spending anyways, I can pay for a white wine for our wedding and we will just bottle it that day with the red. Since it would add a special touch that we made it. The one we both liked would come out to about $6.20 a bottle. I don’t know how much wine for weddings cost. I don’t want it to suck, but it doesn't have to be great.

Follow up question - How many bottles do you intend to buy if you are supplying one White and one Red to your wedding and for how many people? I know it varies per group. I have used multiple calculators and have gotten large variations in answers. These kits make 30 bottles each. But I would want to give each girl at the party one to keep and I would like to keep one of each for us. So it would be down to about 25 bottles of each wine for 200 people.

Our bottles were like $10. We are doing 6 red & 6 white for about 100 people. But I think they are big ones not the regular size.

I think somewhere in the $5-$10/bottle range isn't bad for a wedding. But I'm totally okay with cheap wine so I might be the wrong person to ask.

Each bottle of wine gets 4-5 glasses (depending on who is doing the pouring). So 25 bottles of each would be 200-250 glasses. Are you doing beer and wine or beer, wine and liquor? Do you have any idea of how many people are wine vs. beer drinkers? I would assume about 50% would drink wine, and would drink somewhere in the range of 2-6 glasses depending on how long your reception is. Some people might drink wine with dinner then switch to beer. So if that's true, you might want more wine. But I usually err on the side of too much alcohol instead of not enough.

I'm the wrong person to answer this question because everyone I talk to thinks I'm buying too much alcohol - but I'm paranoid of running out since we have a lot of big wine drinkers, and I assume all most everyone will have a a glass or 2 with dinner.

I'm getting 96 red and 108 white. Yes I may sound crazy, but anything unopened can be returned. I'd rather be safe than sorry

I'm not really all that worried about buying too much. I'll either return it or have hostess gifts for a long time for when I visit someone. Oh, but I'm planning on spending about $5-$10 per bottle. I'm doing a white, a red, and a moscato mostly for me.

We are having wine, beer and liquor. Not too many people drink wine. Some of his family and very few on my side. About 1/5 of our friends would have 1-2 glasses and then switch to liquor. If we run out of alcohol, the venue has a stock that they will open and we will be charged per bottle (of course we hope to not get to the backup stash). I asked a friend who invited almost all the same friends we are inviting and she had a guest list of 300. She said they had 24 white and 24 red and they had one full bottle of each leftover. But we also don't want to be leftover with 10 bottles of each because we don't go through wine that often. I assumed this brew place would be more expensive since it's personalized but it sounds like we'd be spending around that cost, anyways.

Valarie - No problem at all! I didn't like a wine I had at my friend's wedding so I just switched to liquor Smiley smile I just thought it might be a nice touch to have wine that we made at our reception, if we were going to pay that much anyways.

$6.20 a bottle sounds like a great price. I'm not providing my own wine for my wedding but I am a wine drinker & that price is really good especially since you are getting it personalized.

$6 is a great price! So you make the wine yourself? That sounds like a fun process. Is there a website?

We're going with boxed wine (Bota and Black box) because most of our family drink black box and we drink bota (boxed wine has really gotten much better). We're probably going to have a mix... red: cabernet sauvignon and merlot. white: pinot grigio and chardonney. We're also going to get a keg (or maybe half a keg) of local brew and then just bud light (because honestly, most of the beer drinkers in our family drink bud light... gross imo).

I'm looking into hiring a bartender just to make sure that people who are driving afterwards aren't getting too intoxicated. And I'm buying some extra for our after party/camping at the venue. I'm using this to help guide me: http://apracticalwedding.com/2013/01/calculate-alcohol-for-wedding/

I want to make sure that my guests enjoy the wine and I'm not just getting what I like. My MOH is a really big wine drinker and she said both of the ones I liked would go over well for big drinkers. I think if we are concerned about it not being enough, we can just buy a few bottles of the other I liked, too (a sweet red). And we would be able to return the unopened of those. I definitely understand not needing something ultra fancy for the wedding since people should be thankful for a free open bar. And there will be beer and liquor choices if they must complain about the wine Smiley smile I'm one of those people who doesn't drink much because I refuse to drink something I don't like!

It is a local brew company that sells wine and beer kits to make at home. But for an additional fee, you can make it there. So MOH and myself go ahead of time to mix the things together. Then the shop keeps an eye on it while it is fermenting and does whatever they do. We come back a few months later with the girls and bottle it. They provide everything. They even will let us bring snacks and our own wine (or we can buy theirs) to drink while we are doing it. The reds need time to age or else it won't taste right. But if we make a white, we can drink it that day while we bottle.

The wine kits I was looking to make are a Merlot and a Souv. Blanc that is really fruity. There is also a red that is fruity so we might pick up a couple pre-made bottles of those if we are concerned of running out. We will have lots of bud light bottles and some craft beer. Maybe keg, maybe bottle. The venue said that keg's take longer to pour so they recc. bottles. But they can do both. We will also have various liquors. Haven't decided, yet, but at least some vodka, rum and Jameson is big with our group. The bar has pop and mixers.

    Thanks, everyone.

We are paying about $5.75 cnd per bottle. The company we are using said take your guest list and cut it in half, this is how many bottles you would need. Obviously don't include those under age.

I'll be the first to admit I hardly know anything about wine. We will be supplying our guests with wine and beer. I plan to purchase a bottles of red, white, and moscato. I am going the inexpensive route as well. I'm hoping to keep it to $3-$5 per bottle. I'm guessing about 40 bottles total and if there are any left I will be taking them back for a refund.

I actually had an incorrect price. I thought the kits for the island mists were $75, but they are $61. And the in-house making fee is $110. So that means if we make the white and sweet red, it will be $5.70 a bottle and the Merlot will come to $6.10 a bottle. So I'd have the girls pay for the cheaper one and if we make 3 kits of wine (it takes about an hour for 2 people to bottle one kit, and we would have around 8-12 girls there) we would be paying $354 for 90 bottles of wine. Some I would give to the girls, family, keep for us, that leaves us with at least 75 bottles of wine in 3 different kinds for the wedding. That is probably more than enough and we will have something personal. Hmmm.... I'll have to sell this to FH now. Whether we make 2 or 3 kits, it still sounds cost effective to have them make the kits there. (Although, I might do one or two kits separately, with just FH and I so it doesn't feel like I'm using my girls as work horses. Lol. But the guy said that only 2 people can fill bottles at a time with the equipment they have there.)

@Pancakes I so want to do this! How neat! And such a great personal touch to the wedding "Oh yea... I bottled this wine. No big deal." Going to see if there's maybe one in the city where one of my BMs lives that we could do.

Now I'm worried about not having wine at my wedding. All I've ever seen at a wedding is beer and liquor.

We are having beer and wine only, keeps those who don't do so well with liquor out.
