Willowby sizing...thoughts?

Daisy, on December 27, 2018 at 4:16 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14
Long-time lurker finally in need of some advice and perspective. After months of indecision and shopping fatigue, I finally said yes to a wedding dress. It’s the Doyle gown from Willowby by Watters, and of course, my measurements are now hanging me up. When I first bought the dress last week my consultant measured me as a size 4, but I was so surprised and prepared for the traditional bridal sizing that I insisted she order me a size 6. Now I’m wondering if I should have listened to her and gone with the size 4. For reference, my measurements are 33.5x27.5x37.5. Are there any brides out there who were in between sizes who were happy with ordering up/wished they’d ordered down, or brides who’ve purchased a Watters/WToo/Willowby dress and can speak to the sizing/fit?

Personally I’d order a size up rather than a size down. No need to stress yourself over weight loss, you know?

Hey Daisy! I’m a Willowby bride too!

My consultant ordered the dress in a size 4. I typically wear a 0/2 in pants, and XS/S for most shirts and dresses (sometimes a M). I am actually picking up my dress tomorrow and will let you know how it fits!

Those are about my measurements and I always get a 6 in any dress or clothing.

I agree with this. OP, it is very easy to take a dress in especially a size down. Don't stress about this at all! I would rather be safe than sorry and have the dress be slightly too big than too small.

Earias & Kenisha: That was definitely my way of thinking when I first ordered it -- I couldn't care less what the label size says, so long as it fits like a dream. My main concern and the reason I'm considering the size 4 is because of the top, since I'm not even filling a 34A these days...I'm worried that because the back of the dress is open, a seamstress will have a hard time getting it to fit well if they need to take off an 1.5 inches on each side.

That makes sense. But this is such a common problem that an experienced seamstress will have no problem with this. There are many people who are small on top and larger on bottom but they have to order the larger size to fit their bottom - seamstresses know how to make this work.

I have this same concern. I measured exactly into a 6 when I bought my dress, but that was a “skinny day” and I had been dieting leading up to my appointment. I debated ordering the 8 so I’d have room to breath (literally!) but I’m really good about controlling my weight and I knew the 8 would ultimately need more alterations (particularly in the bust). I’ll jist spend the next few months stressing until it comes in!

Keep is updated on how your situation turns out. As PP said, I don’t think you can go wrong ordering a size up. Any seamstress worth the money should be able to fix it up perfectly.

I'm a Willoby by Watters bride too! I measured a 2 but went with a 4 just to be safe. I had alterations done and they're fitting the bodice much tighter, so I agree it's better to order up to be safe.

I just got this exact dress! I got a size 12 sample dress, and I'll have to take in about 2 inches everywhere. I'm a 6/8 usually. With the alterations, I'm thinking an 8 off the rack would have been my ideal. I think the 6 is a safe bet for you, maybe with slight alterations!

That’s crazy and too perfect that we have the same dress and you found my post! Lucky you got a sample dress — sadly most of the Watters dresses run short on me, so extra length was a must. Have you already met with a seamstress then? I’m curious to know how they’ll take in the bodice — I’m assuming it will involve scissors lol.

Hey Daisy! I just got back from trying my dress on and the 4 fit almost perfectly! They'll need to take up the illusion neckline and bring in the waist ever so slightly, and take off about 1.5 inches from the hem.

But I do agree with the other ladies, it's much easier to take in than let out if you're in between sizes. Let us know what you decide to do!

That's great it fits so well! I actually managed to try on a size 6 WToo today that should fit similar, so I feel better about ordering now. It will definitely need alterations, but it wasn't as baggy as I feared, and the hips only had about a quarter inch on each side, so a 4 would probably be snug (so long, sitting!). I'll just need to make sure I don't lose any weight -- although, worst case scenario I get to spend the summer binge eating Chipotle lol. You are all amazing and I'm so grateful for your advice and insight! Never realized how quickly the bride-panic can overtake you!!

Closing the loop on this for any future Willowby brides — my size 6 fits *nearly* perfect. Top needs cups, but it’s not as massive as I feared. Good luck to any future Willowby brides!
