Will We Regret Skipping Engagement Photos?

LovroftheArts, on August 16, 2017 at 5:17 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 50

Ours is a DW and the 2 photographers we have booked are located out of state. We have no plans (or room in budget) to fly there before our wedding to take engagement pics with them.

So if we did opt to have them done, it'd be with a local photographer in our home city. I've noticed a lot of engagement pics seem somehow to line up with the style, theme, or aesthetic of the wedding venue/location. I'm not really seeing how any place in San Diego would make a good stand in for New Orleans. I should also add I've felt especially body conscious/insecure lately from gaining weight earlier this year.

Our STDs went out at the end of July and we don't really feel the need to include a photo in our wedding invitations. I guess it'd be nice to add pics to our wedding website but I dunno, it just feels like a nice extra but unecessary experience (and extra expense) for us.

Has anyone else felt this way? Did you later change your mind? Any regrets looking back, on not having them done?

I thing engagement photos are really sweet, but i also didn't have any time to get them done. my thoughts were, "well, by the time i hung engagement photos, i would just want to replace them with wedding photos anyways...."

I agree with @catlady5x I dont think you will regret it either. We took ours only to use for our wedding website and STDs. We didnt even get any physical prints. I suppose I will frame our favs one day lol

Ours was not related to our wedding style in any way however we ended up booking our hotel block at the same place we took the photos. I think you will be fine skipping them.

Some people have been opting to skip engagement photos for newly wed photos. If you start wishing you had done a shoot, that might be something to consider Smiley smile

I think if you and FS haven't done professional pictures before it would be good. Me and FH were very stiff the first time because we hadn't and you could tell in the pictures. Our second set of pictures were much, much better. (We won a free session at a bridal fair and our photographer package also included an engagement session)

I didn't do them and I don't regret it. I hate having my picture taken so I wanted nothing to do with them. Also my FH was pumped to not do them haha

I have no regrets with skipping engagement pictures. My wedding pictures are the ones that matter more to me and are the ones that will be displayed in my home.

We did a mini engagement session. Photographers often offer mini sessions around holidays, and we paid $100 for a 30 minute session and ten or so edited photos. This was perfect for us as engagement photos fell in the "nice to have" category but were a low priority. I found a photographer offering mini sessions on instagram, which is where they typically advertise for such sessions. We had a lot of fun and used the photos for our invites but I'm glad we didn't spend any more time or money on them than we did.

Thank you everyone for sharing your thoughts and suggestions! I'm relieved to read this is a more common and acceptable wedding item to skip.

@Brittnee -that's a sweet idea, I'll definitely run it by my fiance to see what he thinks

@FutureFuji -that's a fair point, while we have taken professional photos individually over the years, have not yet done any together as a couple

@Jessica -that's actually quite a brilliant business concept! Will definitely consider looking into that as an option, if we feel differently on engagement pics later this year

@Nikki -your avatar pic is stunning! And the wineries in Temecula are gorgeous -my older sister and her fiance almost considered one for their wedding but chose a beach wedding followed by a restaurant reception last minute, when their favorite wineries were already booked on their preferred dates. And that's a very good point!

I love my engagement pics and was adamant about having great photos of us to look back on us young, happy, and in love with no kids yet. They also make our walls look really good.

Your engagement photos don't have to look like New Orleans. They should look like you and your partner, what is your style, what do you like to do together? There have got to be some nice hikes in SD or a great beach shot.

ETA: We sent our save the dates via email before we even did our engagement shoot -- our engagement shoot wasn't until over a year after he proposed. So we didn't use photos for that. We are however using them in frames at our reception and we got a really nice book printed from Artifact Uprising using the photos which will serve as our guestbook.

We didn't do them. We had a bunch of photos from a Flytographer shoot we had done in Istanbul a year before and I put those on our website (mostly because they're AMAZING photos and I wanted to show them off), but we didn't use photos for much else.

An engagement or bridal shoot was included with our photography package, but like you, we were out of state. H suggested I do a bridal shoot when I flew back for my shower, so I did, and it was super fun.

@mel -He did propose at Balboa Park and we are regular visitors there as we enjoy checking out new exhibits at the museums or listening to the Spreckles organ pavillion concerts on Sunday afternoons.

I'm liking the idea of potentially doing a photoshoot there at some future point, but not *necessarily* for engagement pics... must puzzle this out further and of course see what my fiance has to say about all of these new suggestions/ideas.

I don't think you will regret it. The only reason we did them was for our STD. If it weren't for that we would have skipped them.

Didn't do them. Don't regret it. The photos we have of ourselves doing our own thing in natural moments are more authentic and better to me

We had them done and I love them. I definitely would have regretted not having them. That said, they were included in our photo package and we opted to order our STD magnets through our photographer. I love that we have professional pictures of us in normal clothes and won't just have professional wedding pictures. I think we're fricken adorable though so I probably cherish our pics more than the average person. If you're leaning towards it, you could always check out local art colleges; I know photography students and new grads are always looking to build their portfolio at significantly reduced rates. Either way, I'm sure you'll pick what's right for you.
