Will our guests be bored at our micro wedding?

Miche, on September 8, 2022 at 5:54 PM Posted in Wedding Reception 0 8

We're having a micro wedding (total headcount 25) in the gardens of a bed & breakfast. The b&b is blocked off for just our group all weekend, and everyone is staying there for lodging. So far, wedding day evening has been planned as a somewhat casual reception.

We have self-serve stations for food via a caterer and a DJ set up for light music & announcements, but no cake cutting and no dance floor, since majority of our guests and my FH are not into dancing.

We're having a first dance and the parent dances, but no speeches slotted. Originally we weren't going to have a first dance or parent dances at all, but my dad really wants one with me (*cries*) so we wrote it in.

The night is somewhat short:

starts at 6:10pm

first & parent dances at 7:15pm, followed by a group photo and dessert bar opening

last call 8:30pm

ends at 9pm

----

I guess there's approx 1.5 hrs of open/empty time, maybe closer to 1 hr, factoring in transitions and guests being preoccupied with squeezing drinks for last call.

Initially I thought guests would just mingle & socialize around since our original vision was closer to a dinner party, but now I'm starting to get worried that people might get bored for the second half.

An idea I had was to bring in a photo booth -- but not sure if it'll be weird with how small the group is and how casual we wanted the event to be.

Another idea is to bring in speeches, which would probably eat up some open/empty time.

Getting mixed thoughts from the wedding party, and FH and I are torn! Would love some advice/opinions from y'all!

Thank you!

One idea is have a trivia game. This was an option instead of a big dance event. Also, you could keep the dancing option available if there might be people enjoying that. Maybe have croquet or other lawn games. However, the event sounds short enough that people will be occupied as long as they would like

Hi! I love your micro wedding ideas! When is your ceremony? Is that included in the timeline?

Thank you! Yep, ceremony starts at 4:30pm and cocktail hour starts at 5pm! Just had cut it in my original post to keep the focus on question(s) around reception. Smiley smile

I think your timeline works really well as a dinner party. I would maybe include that wording on your wedding invitation. I know it’s not “usually” what’s written but I would write something to the effect of:

Ceremony at 4:30, followed by a sit down dinner.

This will alert the guests not to expect a rager or typical wedding dancing. If you wrote “reception to follow” people might think it was a more traditional reception.

    Good luck!

I think it sound like a lovely reception and I don't think you need to add anything in. People will mingle and talk amongst themselves.

Honestly, that sounds great. I'd be really happy to attend an event like that!
