Will I receive RSVPs if the postcard is a bit smaller than the minimum size?

Kimberly, on August 17, 2012 at 6:45 PM Posted in Planning 0 9

I'm really worried that my RSVP postcards aren't going to get back to me! For some reason I thought about the size today after I mailed them on Monday - I thought I'd have some back by now today - and the cards measured 3.25" x 4.75" and the USPS website says the minimum is 3.5x5. Do you think they will still go through the mail??? I feel so dumb!

You're probably fine. The USPS honors crazy things - like if you tape postage in change to your envelope instead of a stamp, most of the time, they'll still deliver.

Some one else had this problem, but she ordered Envelopes that were teny tiny. I wonder if she did a follow up....

Thanks Hayley! Looks like the PO mailed them to her and charged her 20-30 cents extra a piece. Hopefully mine A) get here and B) I don't have to pay extra!

They charge you a Special Handling fee for it being smaller than the required. And yes, they do measure them. So it ends up cost you more than a regular letter.

If it's too small, they can't process them properly. That's why before mailing anything it's very important to look at the standards at the USPS.com website.

I hope they get to you!

They should get back to you, except they may arrive postage due, because cards that are smaller than the standard size actually cost 20 cents more to mail

Having worked (briefly) for the post office, the antique sorting machines hate small things largely because everything is ferried along by a series of belts, and the belt is only an inch wide at points, so if the top of the card is below the bottom of the belt, it doesn't catch. The extra postage is fair since the unusual size has to be processed by hand, which is *far* more laborious than dumping it into a machine. I could process upwards of 200k pieces of standard size mail in an 8 hour shift by machine, but by hand? Forget it.

Is anyone concerned that postcards show who is planning to attend and will be away from home?
