Wildest wedding dress you've ever seen?

Rosie, on July 12, 2021 at 7:44 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 9

Ok, so we've all seen those articles where people are wearing some of the wildest, most heinous dresses imaginable. You know the ones - '50 of the worst wedding dresses ever' etc! But what's the worst/wildest/most unusual/most fun dress you've actually ever seen in real life?

I've only ever seen two or that were ... interesting. I've seen a few where the dresses themselves were fine but just really poorly altered - usually strapless dresses which aren't tight enough or well tailored enough to hold up the girls, so that all the photos are almost indecent. But I do have one instance, and I so wish I had a screenshot just for myself, since the person has since been divorced and scrubbed all photos from their social media, much to my disappointment.

The dress itself was a beautiful slip style dress which fitted her beautifully, but the beading. THE BEADING! There was no getting around the fact that the shape of the beading, which was circles and loops, closely resembled a male anatomical specimen. It literally looked like she had a willy on the back of her dress. Truly awful. It was so bad, and so shared amongst our group, that every subsequent wedding dress shopping trip I've been on (which has been two or three for various friends and siblings etc!) we have closely examined the beading and lace just in case there is a hidden penis or lady parts, or arrows pointing directly to the crotch or whatnot!

So! What about you? Have you seen a beautiful but unusual gothic black gown? A completely sheer dress and the bride wearing no knickers? We've seen things like this on the runway, but have you ever seen them in real life? TELL ALL!

Hi ! In real life I saw a grey/black wedding dress at church... and a pink one at one ceremony (bride's hair was pink too ;-)).

Knickers for the bride are actually very popular in France, especially personalized. Usually the bride puts them on for the party, but some wear them to the ceremony, too.

For me the worst wedding dress I've ever seen are the ones were the bride looks like she is wearing something that should have been saved for the wedding night for her husband eyes only. No offense to anyone who is going that route with their dress, but you can look sexy on your wedding day without looking like you are walking down the aisle with lingerie on. My thought process is weddings are usually mostly family so why would you wear something that could be mistaken for lingerie🤔. I don't know maybe I was raised old school.

Aside from so many brides wanting to do strapless when its not a flattering look for them I haven't seen any disaster dresses IRL. But seriously - strapless takes a certain body type and impeccable tailoring and I've been to a number of weddings where the bride is constantly pulling up a dress that just doesn't flatter her at all.

A grey/black dress sounds very chic. Pink is my favourite colour so I would have loved that one! I quite like when people do something out of the box that just really suits their personality!

And I think I've seen those knickers! They're very cute.

    Haha SAME.

Each to their own, and if you've got it flaunt it, but not really for me. I actually found it quite hard to find a dress that wasn't a SUPER low v-cut. As quite a busty woman, I'm likely to fall out of something like that in the first place, but I know that on our wedding day, I'll probably be standing and leaning over seated guests, giving Great Uncle So-And-So a front row seat to the girls show which would be uncomfortable for everyone! It was definitely something I carefully considered in choosing my dress!

Yes, I agree that tailoring is a huge part of the problem! It has to be absolutely immaculate, and so many girls lose or gain weight in the lead up that it's very hard to get spot-on.

I do also think... I know from experience with my own figure that you can't stop gravity. There's not some magical spell that can stop even the tightest of strapless bras or tops from slowly sliding down over time due to the weight of it's responsibility! Add in a huge, heavy ball gown slowly pulling things downward, and a bust of over a certain size just... cannot be contained. I was adamant I didn't want a strapless dress for that reason - I just didn't want to risk it, nor did I want to spend my wedding day hitching and hauling and worrying about how much I was showing.

I also think you need to have a more hourglass figure, not overly fleshy armpits, and higher set breasts to pull off strapless. If your waist is smaller than your bust and hips, then there is specific small middle point that the bodice can be fitted to and as long as the bodice has some structure it prevents the dress from sliding one way or another because that smallest point is so precise. My best friend is very slim but doesn't like strapless because she gets that armpit bulge. I do have a smaller waist, breasts that are neither too big nor too small, and no issues with extra armpit fat, but I have a longer torso, broad athletic shoulders, lower set breasts, and fair skin so when I wear a strapless my décolletage area just looks so disproportionately big - its this wide swath of pale skin that is just not flattering! I think maybe I could do a super structured strapless bustier style top that had a sweetheart neckline and lots of push-up/boob lift, paired with a necklace or my hair styled down (or both) to break up the pasty white blank area that is my upper chest. I was really open to different strap, sleeve, and neckline options for my dress but strapless was a big no for me!

I am so glad that the "all bridal dresses are strapless" trend has faded. I always felt like they could get very sausage-looking, very quickly, on brides of every shape and size.

There have been several dresses I have seen where all I could think about was, "how are they going to walk in that??" Those dresses look like they weigh 50 pounds in skirts and beading, and the brides end up looking miserable all night.

I know what you mean. I've seen episodes of Say Yes to the Dress where the mermaid is so tight they can barely shuffle along, and one where she was worried she wouldn't fit down the aisle because of the size of her ballgown skirt and its like, surely that won't be enjoyable.

To be fair though, I remember when I was buying my dress (huge ball gown with a train!) my mum asking if it was comfortable or easy to walk in, and I was like... it IS comfortable, but easy to move around in? Not really. It's a huge dress. But when else am I going to get to wear one? If you only ever buy one dress which isn't for practicality, I think it's fair if your wedding dress is the one, haha! I know for a fact that train is going to be a PITA because people aren't used to trains and definitely stand on them - I wore a super short train at a ball once and it was still annoying, even though it looked beautiful. But there's a difference between somewhat inconvenient and actually painful, IMO!
