Why do i look so bad in bridal makeup?? sos

Stephanie, on December 14, 2022 at 8:37 PM Posted in Hair and Makeup 0 23
Hey everyone! I’m in need of major advice and someone to listen. I just had my second makeup trial for my wedding and I have come to the conclusion that I just look bad in bridal makeup. Now for the details. I wear makeup daily- foundation, concealer, bronzer, mascara, lipliner, highlight, brows etc. I guess by this point I just do my makeup in a way that I am very accustomed to and truly like the way I look when I do it. For both my trials I have stressed that I still want to look decently natural just amped up a bit. Both times I have been left looking like a clown (in my opinion) and I just feel like I look dirty and not soft and beautiful like I always see bridal makeup being. I know it is expected to be heavier so it shows up in photos and lasts all day but I look so bad in person!

I guess I am looking to see if this is normal for brides to feel after their trials. Also it seems like everyone discourages doing your own wedding makeup- is it really a bad idea? I think I would be just fine- my only concern is how it would wear if I cry.
I attached some photos of my makeup normally and how it looked after my most recent trial. Please let me know what you think- anything helps as I don’t have anyone to discuss with other than my FH haha! Why do i look so bad in bridal makeup?? sos 1

Besides the photo quality and the blush you look the same. I'm not saying that to you it may look clownish but I think it looks very subtle and pretty.

Of course you can do your own make up! It's encouraged not to because you should pamper yourself and not stress. But if you taking time to do your make up makes you feel more comfortable and happy then do it! Don't hate the way you look in photos you spent thousands on.

I see the difference, wouldn’t call it clownish but it’s definitely not your normal look! I’m not a MUA but it looks like a lot of darker natural shades on you (darker eyeshadow, darker blush, matte lips) when you normally go for lighter shades & glossy lipstick that adds light to your face.

You could tell the MUA you want something more like the candid shot, just fancier/more polished for the wedding day? I think the difference between the pics is obvious & a MUA could compare them and determine a different makeup approach in line with what you prefer. If you see a bride whose makeup you like maybe ask if they can suggest their MUA, or skim IG for bridal makeup artists and then reach out to some if they’ve done a face/look that you like.
I also don’t see why you couldn’t do your own makeup but probably want to make sure it’ll look good in pictures all day depending on what kind of wedding you’re having, lighting, long day / sweat and tears, etc.
Good luck & you are gorgeous in both pics.

It does help for photos when features of your face are emphasized. But you may be right to some degree. The makeup artist may have done conventional makeup instead of tailoring it to your face.

One thing is that your eyelids probably could remain dark but above those up to your brow should not be so dark..Also, the cheeks could be lighter and should not go down so far toward your mouth.

The lighter makeup you have done on your own seems to open up your face more. Maybe you could try a glassy look to see if that would be a step up for the wedding. Sorta like this:

I can see the difference- however the only criticism I have is to the application of the blush as it doesn’t look quite even in placement and shape. Lip color and shape looks great on you. The eye shadow shade is great and will look lighter on camera, I think only the shape of it could be adjusted. Eyebrows look the same to me. Lashes look great. I know you said you feel like a clown, but it doesn’t appear that way at all. As someone who doesn’t wear makeup every day, but wore theater makeup for 14 years, the overall makeup is good, just a little fine tweak here and there for face/eye shape. It doesn’t look over the top. It will show up well for photos without being bold.
I’d recommend what pps have mentioned in terms of finding inspiration or trying a different look. Sometimes it’s hard for people who wear makeup every day to see themselves with a different look when they’re so used to only one thing.
I don’t recommend doing your own makeup because brides tend to get anxious and stress while getting ready. Some brides end up not being able to replicate their usual look that they want because of this stress.

Ignore my awkward candid but it’s a really good example of how dark I thought my makeup was, but in reality it looked like the right to everyone and photographed really well.
Just wanted to give this to you as an example of trial/day of compared to how it was perceived Smiley smile

I don’t think you look like a clown at all, but it’s all about what makes you feel comfortable and beautiful! Did your MUA allow for feedback after the trial? I would send her more photos of your everyday look and see if she can do those same shades/style but with the professional quality makeup she has that will last through the day! You’re also not alone in feeling this way. I thought I looked very different from my usual self after my trial, but it took FH to realize I even had the makeup on (he’s a dork; I took off my sunglasses and when he saw the lashes he realized lol), so it didn’t look as drastic as I feared. But definitely go with whatever look will make you feel confident on your big day!

Oh my gosh I could have written this post myself. I went to my trial and asked for clean, natural, fresh faced, and was given what felt to me like full glam. I also wear a good amount of makeup normally, and ultimately after talking with my photographer, decided I'll be doing my own makeup day of.

Hi Mary, thank you so much! I think that could be it, just different colors/finishes than I am used to. Im trying to take everyones input and maybe try a similar look myself that's more tailored to my liking color wise etc. Thank you so much again!!

Hi Michael- this is something I didn't even think about! Its hard to pinpoint these things when looking at yourself- all I could tell is I just didn't look like myself. You're right the makeup just isn't quite right for my face and eye shape. I spent some time looking up photos trying to see what face shape and eye shape I have. Came to the conclusion I may have a square face and round eyes (???) so I found some tips for those shapes. Im going to try a look myself that tailors to that and see how it turns out. The picture you suggested us beautiful and totally what I am going for complexion wise. Thank you so much for your help!!

Hi Gillian, Seeing your photos helps a ton to see that it def doesn't look as bold in the photos!! Good point about it being hard to see myself in a look I'm not used to since I usually don't stray too far from my everyday makeup- I think that is probably a big part of it. I do think what I don't love about it is placement of the shadow and blush so like you said those prob need to be more tailored to my face shape. Thank you for showing me your photos (beautiful btw!) and telling me what you think!!

Hey Kimberly- thank youSmiley smile she totally did, the makeup artist was great and listened well. At the end when I saw the look I think I was just overwhelmed seeing something so different on my face that I couldn't even pinpoint what particularly I didn't love. After the trial I tried tweaking things like putting some powder on so it wasn't so shiny, wiping off some of the shadow, changing the lip but I still felt totally different. Im glad I'm not the only one who has felt like this, thank you for telling me thatSmiley smile

Hi Lydia! it makes me feel so much better hearing other women have felt like this. I am leaning towards doing it myself but am kind of overwhelmed with where to begin lol- there are so many videos and tutorials and products people recommend. I did some research today on face shapes and eye shapes so I am going to try doing my own makeup following the "rules" for my shapes and see how it goes. Good point about talking with the photographer- I may reach out to mine and see if she has tips for me if I do end up doing my own. Good luck with your makeup I will be hoping it turns out exactly how you want!!Smiley shame

Hopefully it helps some. I know the glam look, for example, may make some uncomfortable having such a different style. But even just being different, the trial didn't seem to enhance features correctly. There were no feature that needed correction but the style (while possibly not being a big issue over all) was not right. You are likely on the right trail to check the shape of your eyes and face. I think often there is the goal to make things a bit rounder looking.

I dont know too much about professional makeup so I didn't know it may be typical that bridal makeup is intended to make my face rounder- definitely could be why the blush is on the apples of my cheeks- I usually put it on the tops of my cheekbones like near my temples! I def can put my finger on particular things I do and don't like now. Thanks again!

I'm just going by sight. There was a prof makeup person who commented on someone's self-planned bridal makeup vs. the makeup artist. That was a while ago, so there is probably good input someone like that would have. But not all makeup artists work at the same level. There was someone posting on doing her own makeup and trying different foundations. Not recommending anything here but just sharing what was posted.

I did my own makeup for my wedding! I applied it exactly how I normally do, and didn’t change it to be more fancy or upscale or elevated. My pictures came out lovely!

My advice would be to do EXACTY what YOU want. There’s no right or wrong. Good luck! You’re beautiful by the way Smiley smile

Bird- thank you so much for giving me some insight from someone who did do it themselves! I want to look like myself in the photos AND in person so it helps to know the photos could still look great doing makeup myself. Thank you again!!Smiley shame

Okay I may try looking for a post like that to see what a makeup artist says/recommends!
