Why Do Brides Have Videographer Tape Them Getting Ready?

Stylish Bride, on March 12, 2014 at 12:08 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 15

I'm trying to grasp this concept, but I'm failing miserably. Why would a bride want to have people see her get ready with makeup, eyelashes, hair stylist, etc.? Why start your wedding video with that? So people can see how imperfect you are?

Makeup should be applied in private. Am I old school or something?

I can understand wanting a few photos here and there, but I'm seeing the first 1-2 minutes of 8 minute video highlights be just about makeup.

It's really like a story they're telling with a beginning, a middle and an end and since the videographer probably wasn't there for the beginning of the love story they start with the getting ready process.

I feel like the point of wedding videography is to capture the entirety of the day and the transition of two individuals becoming one, which to me includes the getting ready part. That being said, if you're thinking about having a videographer I'm sure you could specify that the getting ready part is not something you're interested in, and they could cater it to your particular tastes.

I feel the same way about getting ready photos. Lots of people do them, but I'm not interested, so I'm choosing not to. Not everything that is commonly done as part of a wedding makes sense or is needed.

Sure, it's very common to see a photo of the couple's rings or the wedding dress hanging in a window. Does that mean you need to do it or there's a reason? Nope! Some people like it, others do not. Whatever floats your boat.

I disagree with your statement of "so people can see how imperfect you are". It just doesn't sit right with me. I love wearig make up. I think getting ready pictures are beautiful. I don't consider myself (or anyone) without make up on to be imperfect.

Although I don't want pictures of me looking like I just woke up so my sister is doing my base makeup so when the videographer and photographer get there, I don't scare anybody.

I love the getting ready photos. They're of the family and bridesmaids all enjoying the day and excitement prior to the actual wedding. They're the last few moments you'll have with the ladies closest to you before the day starts. I never wear makeup, so who cares if there are photos of me putting it on? They're just seeing me! Not the stylized version of me.

What Champagne said. Everyone knows that everyone else is imperect. Everyone knows that brides wear make up (usually) on their wedding day. If you aren't comfortable with just explain that to your photographer/videographer. Photographers do the same thing typically.

I, personally, don't feel comfortable with anyone taking pics/video of me while I'm putting on my garter. Yeah, I don't know why, I just don't think a garter being slid up my leg is a neccessary picture/part of the video. To avoid that, I'll put that on myself before getting into the dress.

My photographer and videographer are both coming for the getting ready photos but coming when my hair is done and my makeup is at the finishing touches part. It'll be nice for my FH to see it and also see the candid moments that are happening with my BM and family before the wedding. It shows what is leading up to the formal ceremony and reception and this a time when we're more relaxed and I'm having fun with my girls.

    I. Told my videographer that I want a video because I can't see my love getting ready for the day and his friends. I can't see him readying my love letter to him and he can't see me. I also can't see my own face as I walk down the aisle to FH. And it captures the whole day

I don't think I could have a video without the getting ready part to me it just ties the entire video together. I don't see why someone would not want to do that either its like a tradition, its the beginning of your wedding day.

As a video producer I jump at the non formal opportunities. Many photographers boss the couples around for the day and line them up execution style for photos at every opportunity, even if they are killing a beautiful moment.Videographers have their work cut out for them if the photog is overbearing. Catching the couple with family, chilling with friends or any other non-cookie cutter white wedding moment is gold. Often, the Bride simply looks better in track pants and a sweatshirt than the poofy ceremonial gowns which make all brides look the same...uncomfortable.

I am not videotaping the getting ready part. Who wants to see my ass is film???? I see that as a waste of time. I am having candid shots taken of near the end of getting ready, like my dress being buttoned up or my veil being placed on my head by my mom....

I didn't want photos taken while getting ready because I know I'll look awful until it's all finished, but FH said he thinks it's a shame he's missing that part of the day so would like to see them. I've agreed to have some taken and will just make sure I get to see them first to veto any bad ones!

    Vain I know...
