Who's doing the "fake cake"?

He said he would put together a fake cake (it would have a piece cut out into it that would have real cake that we could do our ceremony with as well as a anniversary topper) and then do a sheet cake. He said no one but him or I would know that the cake was "fake". The cost and savings were fabulous!! He quoted me $275 and we will have both a beautiful "fake cake" and enough real cake to feed 100 people.

Any other brides out there doing a "fake cake"??

@Amber...they cut a section out of the "fake part" and put a slice of real cake in to do the cake cutting part. I have no clue where you know how to find that...I am meeting with the baker Friday and will ask him this...

@Rubylee; please share this!! It is such a brilliant cost saving idea and I had no idea bakers could do this until mine told me.

@Miya: BEAUTIFUL cake!! My question is though; did you do an anniversary cake

@theragirl; good luck!! Let us know and post pics when you are done Smiley smile

@Mark; that stinks..I know it was a difference of over 400 bucks for us, but each baker is different.

I wish I could find a baker that would do that for us and won't charge a arm and leg.

@Jean...usually they do the whole top tier fake...i actually have never heard of them cutting out a slice. but i think that is really creative!

more often since the top tier is the smallest they just do it all cake. kinda throws out the whole tradition of eating the top tier on your 1yr anniversary, but if it saves me hundreds of dollars...ill bake a cake for FH on our anniversary lol!

I looked into doing a fake cake as a way to save money on the cake. The bakery we ended up going with, however, wanted only $2.99/slice and we have 100 guests. Since I booked with her at a bridal show, I also received 10% off , so our cake only cost us $270. I would definitely keep the fake cake in mind, but maybe shop around a bit too and see if you can get a good deal for a real cake - besides, it's always fun to do more cake tastings! Smiley winking

I cant wait to our first cake tasting!! I would shop around, but I love this baker and he totally sold me on the idea of the fake cake.

@Kimberly, go for it!! I know it sounds bad, but I'm not telling anyone about this except my momma...I'm afraid FH will hate the idea Smiley winking

@Lisa; Thats an awesome price!! What kind of cake are you having??

What flavors of cake did all the married people on here end up going with??

My sister's friend did it. She had an awesome fake cake, it was gorgeous and very tall. Then since she had a dessert bar, she had small boxes with a piece of "wedding" cake for the guests to take home.

I heard about this from one of the venues I was looking at when I first started planning. I loved the idea and might still bring this idea up with my local baker! Smiley smile

    @amber e.

have your baker make the bottom tier real that way you and your FH have something to cut in front of your guests. at my venue after we cut into the bottom tier for show, lol the staff is going to take the fake cake away so when they bring out slices of the sheet cake we ordered no one will know the difference.

In most cases dummy cakes can cost as much as real cakes. It is still just as much work to decorated them unless you go to a bake or hotel that have dummy cakes they reuse. I have to purchase new foam dummies for every cake and they aren't cheap, almos a much as the ingredients for a real cake. Places that offe them super cheap probably have them already covered in fondant and just change the door to order. I know for a fact that places do this from when I used to work catering.
