Who wed you?

Brianna, on January 18, 2020 at 6:35 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 7
My fiance really wants his uncle to marry us. While I am ok with it I am worried. He is ordained by the state of Oregon, and we live and will marry in the state of Florida.

Does this make a difference? Does he need to be reordained in Florida?

You need to check state laws- some are much stricter than others. Here in Virginia absolutely NO online ordaining things work. In other states you can get ordained in five minutes online.

He needs to be licensed to perform marriages in the state he’s performing the ceremony in.

Officially does not matter who marries you rather who notarizes the paper work and who files it.

Kristen is correct. Here in FL you only need a notary to witness the signatures on the marriage license to be legal. The uncle could perform the ceremony and a FL notary could make it official.

You need to check with your state. Laws vary. In NH, you can be married by a Justice of the Peace of the state of NH or someone ordained by an official religious group in the state of NH or who is ordained to perform marriages in another state by a church/temple/mosque, etc. I don't believe online certificates are valid in NH.

As Kristen mentioned, anyone can perform your ceremony though. You just need an authorized person to sign your paperwork - they don't have to say or do anything other than sign your marriage certificate/license. We asked our friend to become a JP to marry us, but he isn't eligible, however his wife would be, so we may just have him perform our ceremony and she sign the papers.

You’ll need to check with the state that you’re getting married in. My husbands uncle wed us in Oregon but was ordained in Washington. It wasn’t a problem and we’re legally married now.
