Does the matron or maid of honor stand closest to the bride on the wedding day?

I have only heard this discussed once and the position taken was that the maid stands closest so that she can tend to the bride's needs. She is single and has no other responsibilities at the wedding (presumably referring to spouse and children).

Traditionally yes. Eta oh I guess I misunderstood the question. If you have 2 maid/matrons of honor then its just up to you who stands next to you.

Traditionally matron I believe. My sister is my maid and my bf is my matron. I'm having my sis stand next to me though!

I had both and they decided amongst themselves. My matron of honor is incredibly not religious (catholic non mass ceremony) and I think was more comfortable sitting in the pew.
