Who should walk me down the aisle?

Carly, on August 24, 2017 at 12:04 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 21

My father just passed away unexpectedly 3 weeks ago. Smiley sad My heart is very heavy, and I'm not sure who I should have walk me down the aisle now. My wedding is in May so I have lots of time to decide. I thought of having my 8 year old son, but I'm not sure he's old though to understand the significance of it. My other option is my 2 brothers. Thoughts our suggestions?

So sorry for your loss. Both of those are good options. It would be a memory your son could look back on and understand the significance of later.

Another option would be to walk solo, and have a keepsake with you as you walk so that he is symbolically walking with you. Wrap your bouquet with material from a tie of his? Or a locket?

It is always an option to walk yourself down the aisle, or your mother could walk you. Either way, sorry for your loss. You could to a small tribute to him by placing a small pic of him in a locket and attaching it to your bouquet?

So sorry for your loss. I can only imagine how you feel.

I would pick whoever you would feel the most significance walking down the isle with. There's really no wrong choice here, all of your options sound like good options to me!

My cousin just got married and his wife's mom walked her down the aisle because her father had recently passed.

I'm sorry for your loss, no one should have to go through that so close to a huge life event.

I'm so very sorry for your loss. I don't think you can go wrong with either of those options. Or as others have said, you could walk solo and maybe have a locket with a pic of your dad in your bouquet as a nice tribute.

Sorry for your loss. What about an uncle? My uncle is my godfather so he's walking me down the aisle. My dad is in the advanced stages of Alzheimer's so he won't be able to make it. I'm honoring him by mentioning him in the ceremony and using one of his poems as a reading.

I thought of that too, but I'm not close to any of my uncle's. I appreciate all your kind words. This is definitely a hard decision. I'm glad someone suggested my mom. I hadn't thought of that. My and I are really close.

I'm so sorry for your loss. My father passed away during wedding planning. I don't have a son, and one brother who still sobs at the mention of my dad, so I'm walking myself down the aisle. I've made a brooch for my bouquet and I'm having a piece of my dads shirt sewn inside my dress. Most important do what you want. Don't let people sway you. And take some time to heal.

I am so sorry for your loss.

I agree with PP about your options: by yourself, with your mom, any uncles, your son, or your brothers. It is whatever will make you happiest. Also I love the ideas about incorporating something special from him into your big day.

Your mother. You don't have to have a male relative to do it. That's extremely sexist and goes back centuries, to when women were considered property, to be handed off from one male's control to another.

I am so sorry for your loss.

My Dad passed away 13 years ago, and this is the first thing people asked me when we announced our wedding. I have decided my Mom will walk me down the aisle. I do have 3 brothers, and many uncles, but I can not choose and pick just one because I love them all too much. I will probably be carrying a photo of my Dad with me.

So sorry for your loss. I lost my father too and I'm walking down the aisle alone. No need for anyone to come down with me.
